Pros

Ankura will sharpen your social justice skills real quick. Come here if you want to learn what it means to turn back time to a misogynistic, discriminative, harassment-filled place.

Cons

EVERYTHING. If I could give Ankura 0 stars, I would. 1. Career Opportunities: There are none. Management tries to keep you in the same department. They stack you with their own projects and run off on vacations. After a year there, they might change your title if you happen to be a white male. But if you happen to be a woman or minority, you are treated as a second-class citizen. You will need all the luck in the world if you express dissatisfaction--management and Human Resources will target and retaliate against you. I've seen this happen much too often. 2. Compensation and Benefits: You are lowballed, overworked, and underpaid. Ankura, on purpose, has not released any document with their pay scales. All employees constantly ask when it will be released and Ankura just ignores it. Benefits, the only good benefit is my health insurance. It beats paying $10 more through Marketplace Healthcare. Other than that, they have tried to throw in tuition assistance- a great $500. Oh, and gym inside the building across the street--until three months ago, it was only a benefit Senior Associates and higher received. 3. Work/Life Balance: You do the work for the life balance of the Directors and Senior Managing Directors. Managers will do anything to keep you from growing. Ankura does not have any established initiatives to help the growth of their employees. When it comes to community outreach, Ankura is too cheap to donate to. In fact, Ankura desperately asks their employees each week for pictures of their community engagements--community engagements Ankura absolutely did not help with or support. 4. Senior Management: Ankura's management team needs to be transparent. The transparency in this place is nonexistent. You have a majority of employees freaking out because of this but most are scared to say anything because of the retaliation tactics. If you are a Director of higher the pay is great, but this money comes from the backs of the little people. 5. Culture and Value: The culture at Ankura is one that sucks your soul empty. The environment is harmful to the mental and physical well-being of its employees. The value is absolutely awful, you are rented per hour and paid less than 25% of what they are selling you for. Try and ask for your rental price and see how willing they are to provide you with that information. Ankura values its employees so much the turnover rate is over the roof--the only thing breaking the glass ceiling.

Sad to see the true state of the firm

Pros

The office was state of the art, great snacks/food, medical benefits were good.

Cons

I can only give an honest and constructive feedback for my time at Ankura, for my team, and for my location/office - which was in Washington, D.C. However, it seems like the toxic culture is actually prevalent across all locations. Ankura had put a big physical and emotional toll on me looking back. Now that I've long moved past Ankura, there is a drastic change in my overall job growth, professional development, emotional well-being, etc. Ankura is an extreme WIP that quite frankly is a sinking ship. As others have mentioned countless times, there are 2 big themes of this firm that need to be highlighted and/or addressed...though I can name 10+ if I had the time: 1. Toxic Management and Culture - The structure of this firm can be visualized like an inverted pyramid (yes, it's hard to picture that because most companies don't operate under that business model). There are more SMDs, MDs, Directors than there are senior associates and associates. It doesn't take much deep thinking to see the potential problems that can cause. To compound the problem, there is toxic management that displays harassment ex/implicitly. 2. Advancement (or there lack of) - Due to the inverted pyramid structure at Ankura, the top positions control most of the pie ($). And if you have more top positions that dominate the firm, there's less for the bottom. And yet the bottom, as countless others have previously mentioned, do a LOT of the work. Continuing on this downward spiral, the top don't sell enough work to justify their massive salaries. This isn't rocket science to understand the big red flags and/or consequences this causes...there is a high turnover rate that is being seen that doesn't establish any culture whatsoever to develop and maintain. In addition, there is no true HR/performance review process with no clear promotion trajectory, After having started my new job a while ago after moving forward from Ankura, I can't understate how much I've grown professionally, emotionally, etc. I felt that I could've learned and grown so much more had I spent my time at a firm that truly cared about my well-being, professional development, etc other than Ankura.

Ankura Response

As a former employee, you likely are unaware of all the changes that have taken place in the last year as we continue to live out our core value, Learn Every Day. The past year and a half has been full of transitions, and we have seen many colleagues adapt and become even greater professionals through our growth. Some of the major firm-wide changes in recent months that have created continuity and clarity across the organization include a newly launched diversity committee and a firmwide review and promotion process. We are proud of everyone who has worked together to make something even greater and look forward to our continued growth and maturity.

Pros

Free snacks and the lunches for on boarding and off boarding.

Cons

There are too many. If I listed them all I'm sure HR will comment with a smug response on how I'm a disgruntled worker. Please believe all the negative responses and note that all the positive ones are written by MD's or SMD's. Ankura has no diversity, whatsoever. They may claim some 57% diversity in their leadership, but not in the rest of the company. I wonder if Ankura has ever heard of competitive pay. If you are hired as an Associate or Sr. Associate be advised that you will have the same salary as someone who works in retail. I've heard some employees had to work two jobs to make ends meet. And promotions? Forget it. Not possible, your manager won't care about you or your development. This is company wide. As the company is planning to be bought out, financials are tight and you will be seen as an extra expense. Overall, a bad experience and the last consulting firm in DC you would want to work for.
