Pros

Truly remote-first culture, not just in name. Remote before remote was cool. You can genuinely work from home without pressure to be “always on" and you can know that there will absolutely never be a return to office mandate here. Work-life balance is possible, especially if you have a strong manager who advocates for their team and protects their time. Your day to day work is with genuinely great people. Leaving the people I worked with everyday was such a difficult decision to make.

Cons

Compensation is significantly below market rates, which makes retention and morale challenging over time. Everyone acknowledged this. Raises were rare and in the peak of inflation there was no raise. Recent struggles hitting company goals have led to very reactive decision-making. There’s a pattern of initiatives being rolled out without enough strategic planning, resulting in “two steps forward, three steps back” and lots of whiplash that results. Communication is severely lacking. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Acquiring and integrating very different companies has created operational friction. There often seems to be a lack of upfront planning, leading to a “building the plane while flying it” approach that doesn’t scale well at a larger company size. A few years ago at a One Day we were told the days of this are gone, but they have only increased since.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and candid reflection on your experience. We’re especially grateful for the many years you invested in BELAY and for the impact you made during your time with us. We’re encouraged to hear that the remote-first culture, flexibility, and relationships you built were meaningful highlights. Creating an environment where people can do excellent work while also honoring their personal lives has always been a core part of who we are, and we’re grateful that this was your experience. At the same time, we take your feedback seriously. Your comments regarding compensation, communication, and organizational change reflect areas we are actively evaluating as we continue to grow and evolve. We recognize that seasons of growth and transition can feel challenging, and feedback from long-tenured team members is especially valuable in helping us better understand where we need to improve. Your encouragement to remain grounded in strong cultural foundations, clear communication, and thoughtful planning is heard. These are important priorities, and insights like yours help inform how we move forward with greater intention. Pros

True work from home work.

Cons

Pay is low/capped. Belay sends out emails from accounting advising clients that their rate is going up 1% without even telling their VA's so they can advise their clients. If you have a very self-sufficient client or VA that doesn't need any hand holding Belay is definitely making bank off the VA's back. 70/30 split in favor of Belay is very unfair if you have a client that hasn't even been in touch with their CSC in over 4 years. Sending out increase invoices when the client doesn't "need" any of Belay's services feels like a money grab to both the client and the VA since this isn't even split with the VA. Belay's prices for clients are becoming too high. They can place an ad on Indeed or go to a competitor that offers the same services or more for less.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and for the many years you’ve invested in serving clients through BELAY. We deeply value the commitment and consistency of contractors who have helped build and sustain this work over time. We’re glad to hear that the flexibility and true work-from-home model continue to be meaningful benefits. At the same time, we hear the concerns around pay caps, rate increases, and how value is experienced—particularly in long-standing, highly self-sufficient client relationships. Your feedback highlights an important tension that exists in scaling a high-touch, relationship-driven service while also supporting the systems that make remote work reliable and sustainable. In addition to placement, BELAY handles client acquisition, matching, and onboarding, along with backend administration such as contracts, invoicing, collections, and ongoing client support. These services are designed to allow contractors to focus on the work they do best, without the need to market themselves, manage billing, or navigate client logistics independently. Even when day-to-day support may feel minimal in stable relationships, the infrastructure and advocacy remain in place should needs shift on either side. That said, we recognize the importance of clear and timely communication—especially around rate adjustments—and your feedback regarding transparency is well taken. Thank you again for your faithfulness, your professionalism, and your willingness to share candid feedback. Voices like yours help shape how we grow, improve, and serve both contractors and clients with greater clarity and care. We encourage you to connect directly with your Talent Specialist regarding your pay rate and any other areas of feedback you have. Warmly, The BELAY Team

Pros

working remotely and having access to more clients

Cons

routinely being overlooked for said clients and having someone else decide what would be a good match for me rather than letting me make that decision.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your continued partnership with BELAY over the past several years. We appreciate your recommendation and your honesty. We’re glad to hear that remote work and access to client opportunities have been meaningful benefits for you. At the same time, we recognize how frustrating it can feel to be overlooked for engagements or to desire more agency in the matching process. Our Client Services Consultants work to thoughtfully match contractors and clients based on skills, availability, and long-term success for both parties, but we understand that this process can sometimes feel limiting or impersonal. BELAY is built on serving people well—clients and contractors alike—and we are committed to fostering a professional environment where individuals with diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds can do meaningful work and feel respected. Feedback like yours is important, and we take it seriously as we continue refining how we listen, communicate, and support our long-tenured contractors. Thank you again for the impact you’ve made through your work and for sharing your voice. We’re grateful for your contributions. Warmly, The BELAY Team
