It has been a tough year

Pros

Despite waves of the layoffs, furloughs and resignations this year there are still some good people around. Leadership was historically very against work from home and used time tracking reports to make sure we turned up in the office at a certain time. Despite the previous resistance we made the forced transition to working from home with minimal bumps. Miss our Friday socials and other events. We do our best in the remote environment to keep in touch outside formal project duties. More opportunities to get on staffed projects than earlier in the year.

Cons

It has been a tough run and that has taken a toll. Year started with a round of layoffs after much discussed projects did not materialize. This came as a surprise given leadership's communication on all the projects in the pipeline. Then the virus hit and we had a heavy round of furloughs. There is a steady stream of resignations too as people secure opportunities elsewhere. A lot of us are actively looking. A push on rebranding as a product company although most staffed projects still focus on sending a team into a company tasked with finding heads to cut. Success on projects often means we get a bunch of people laid-off somewhere so it is not the most purposeful or inspiring work. Some senior leaders are ill-tempered or bring unnecessary aggression to meetings.

Pros

When I reflect on this job, especially compared to the experiences of my friends at other companies, I realize how much I have to be grateful for. I've learned so much here and really like my coworkers. I feel like I can be myself and that my opinion matters and will be heard and respected. Over the last several months in particular I have been happy with my projects and felt engaged in my work and satisfied with the situation working remotely. Business has also picked up and while personally the outlook used to be more cloudy, especially at the start of the pandemic, it's much brighter now and I feel personally excited.

Cons

We definitely had a period where things felt disorganized and work was much slower, as we were and still are transitioning to a product company. I think it was hard to know where things would go, and COVID did not make it easier, but throughout the last months, with some more reorganization and clarification of the business model and product opportunities, plus more customers, things feel much better now. We also had a really nice culture in the office pre-COVID and while there are certainly perks to working remote (and obviously less of a choice during a pandemic), I do miss some of these days spent in the office around my team and especially the social events and annual offsite.
