Mismanaging Compelling Technology

Business Outlook

Pros

• Strong materials in competitive 3D printing environment • Women representation in leadership team • Largely competitive perks package for competing for talent within Silicon Valley • Flexible schedule to maintain work/life balance

Cons

• Toxic work environment with rampant fear of job termination, exclusion, or unequal treatment as a consequence of expressing alternative ideas or any departure from the middle management company line • Spread thin resources on an incomplete stagnant closed loop product line, resulting in a waning value proposition and unclear direction and future • Black hole of qualifications and competence in business development and growth • Preference for titles, specific degree educational backgrounds, and nepotism over experience and capabilities • No human capital planning

Pros

- Cool tech - Subsidized lunch - Fun holiday parties

Cons

- Management speaks in generalities and hypes up all the possibilities, but doesn't translate into action for employees - Management doesn't act on feedback. Rather ignore it and hope it goes away - Little to no investment in employee career growth - Fast turnover, I've heard of at least 3 people that left within 9 months - Some teams are stretched super thin while others are idle - Unclear R&Rs. Teams often ask what each other are doing and what they were hired for. - Annual cash bonus only applies to Directors and above - Doesn't back up their "values". No exit interview or showing they care once you give notice. They just disregard you. - Need to convince customers of functional value of addictive manufacturing. Depending on the application, this can be straightforward or an uphill battle. - Need to be cost competitive with more traditional manufacturing methods. - Strongly suggest to get a tour of the printing and post processing process. From there, you decide for yourself on the growth prospects. Don't just take their word for it.

Management so clueless they don't even know what to tell people to do

Pros

The print technology is great. Benefits are good and facility is pretty good too. If you try to quit they will promote you.

Cons

Pervasive "Can't do" attitude. You have to look a certain way to be successful here. Rich people only. The best talent I've seen at Carbon has left. Extremely difficult to be promoted. There appears to be a lot of flexibility with roles, but in the end the roles you are allowed to perform will be limited by your physical appearance or if you possess any hot button traits. There are very toxic and stagnant management chain that is extremely unpleasant to work with. Many people are pretend working and it just depends on your popularity how little work you can get away with. It feels like working in a high school with the drama, popularity contests, and blatant displays of wealth. Some allude to the culture at Carbon being a scrappy start-up culture but that could not be farther from the truth. It is a culture of entitled people talking down to each other. It is also downright offensive the way they throw around senior titles. Most people that hold senior titles here probably threatened quitting and were promoted solely off that. They expect you to teach your higher-ups everything only to be looked down upon and treated poorly.
