Pros

City & Guilds does a great job for its learners and especially those who find the 'traditional' route of gaining qualifications challenging. Its a fantastic brand to have on your CV, the office facilities are good, the benefits likewise, and generally people enjoy the work that they are doing because it is so worthwhile.

Cons

The leadership has lost the plot. It's all powerpoint slides and spreadsheets. I don't think the guy who runs it really understands the business at all. There's little stability in the senior team, they seem to get fired with surprising regularity. And direction doesn't really cascade into the organisation. This is a shame, because under a previous Director General, it was all very different. He was approachable, seen about the offices, clearly knew his stuff, and was a recognised authority used by governments and others as an expert. You felt you knew where you were going and it was very rewarding. The successive reorganisations seem to have eroded the sense of mission and purpose in the top team. I think they have forgotten this is one of UK's biggest charities and it has a social justice agenda in education. They only seem interested in making money.

Pros

- Has a good reputation from the past - Good company perks - health insurance, bike scheme, discounted canteen - Centre of London {a perk if you like the city}

Cons

This was an awful company to work for. It took me a couple of years to restore my mental health. There are many longstanding members of staff that date from an age where C&G were worldwide 'experts' in vocational training. Now they are worldwide providers but have only tiny pockets of expertise. Staff training is poor and ineffectively targeted so practises are outdated. Dinosaur is the term they sort to shake off when I worked there. They strived to do this through boosts to Information Technology, forfeiting quality and undermining staff and teams involved with robust assessment along the way. There is little understanding of the fundamental nature of the Business and many Government initiatives [that might have had better success] have fallen because this organisation was turned to for direction. Riding on 'merit from long ago' has served them well, but how long can this go on for. I saw a part of their demise as they were forced to make a series of redundancies and sold off buildings in Guiltspur St to stay afloat, when they should have been thriving - if only they had better knowledge of the job. The Senior Management Team seemed the main problem. Induction and recruitment processes were very poor. As a result turnover was fast and existing staff members frequently failed to greet or acknowledge new staff members. There could as a result be a strangely cold atmosphere given the large number of staff in the building. Insufficient attempt to help staff understand the various parts of the business, role requirements, or how things got done. Staff talent was definitely wasted left, right and centre. Institutional racism was rampant, with many aggrieved BAME staff. Lots of Black women in admin and cleaning roles and lots of people of colour in adverts. Senior Management was very 'white' and showed little understanding when challenged around the organisations statistics. A general attitude of 'if I can get into the Snr Team as a white working class man or a white lesbian woman' then anybody can do it :-/

Pros

Great reputation as a training provider.

Cons

Trying to cut costs across the whole organisation which is leaving the products inferior and the (in the main) excellent employees stretched and demotivated.
