This organization will not take care of you

Pros

The people who work here are dedicated, passionate people who truly care about the work they are doing for patients and the community. You will learn a lot while working here about the barriers that many New Yorkers face in accessing quality healthcare. If you take that information to heart and are willing to meet patients where they are at, working here will make you a better provider and give you a much more nuanced understanding of how to reach people and provide care.

Cons

This company laid off dozens of workers during the middle of a pandemic and took over two months to provide any guidance on healthcare benefits that would be available to former employees after being laid off. Many of these employees are parents and older folks who are in critical need of benefits (as everyone is!) at this scary time. The company argued that the severance was “better than most people are getting at this time.” While this may be true, it is clear that the savings that this company made were due to laying off some of its lowest-paid and vulnerable employees (there is no evidence that its top paid administrative employees or board members took any substantial cut to try to save these jobs). For a healthcare company that claims to value community health so much, their actions say otherwise.

Pros

Most staff are passionate and really care about CHN’s patients and communities. Good benefits (PTO, health insurance). Lots of autonomy. Lack of structure allows for a lot of learning/problem solving on the job.

Cons

Very little investment in training and staff management. Low morale due to frequent turnover, under staffing, and burnout. Leadership tries to milk staff’s capacity without supporting administrative functions (building effective systems, communication, retaining good employees, administrative time, meetings), so there are a lot of people making things up as they go. This is embarrassing as an organization with a long history.

Awful management, rewarding work

Pros

This is a place which gives NPs a lot of autonomy and is a great place to learn a wide set of skills as a new provider. The work itself is rewarding because you truly are making a difference in the lives of your patients who are very appreciative of your service. Health insurance is also good and coworkers are friendly. Learn what you can and then go to a place where you are actually valued as a provider.

Cons

Very little administrative time for charting/refills/lab review/ patient phone calls (1 hr/week), overbooking patients (expected to see 20+ patients per day), poor work life balance, high burnout and thus high turnover company wide, expected to work saturdays, management not receptive to feedback, a lot of disorganization with management. Would see providers having emotional breakdowns on the verge of quitting on the regular. Also felt like there was differential treatment and double standards based on race, lack of diversity in upper management.
