Declining company culture

Pros

Working at Denver Matress, initially, was an amazing fit for a consistent work schedule, as well as, aligning with my personal values. You work the same schedule every week with two days off together, so it is easy to schedule things you need to get done on your off days accurately. The pay is extremely great, even when meeting the minimum performance standards. Merchandising, organizing, and completing daily tasks are not very time consuming and easy to complete and maintain.

Cons

When management shifted, company culture changed drastically. It went from a company that cared about its employees to focusing on pure performance numbers. They call the performance numbers “goals” when in reality they are a set of standards that progressively get harder and harder to hit year after year. They increase the percentages that are required with every sale every year. Even when you hit every “goal” you are made to feel like you could have done more. Constantly felt like I was walking on eggshells even when succeeding. They also require you to memorize a script of sales which isn’t to difficult except that it changes every 6 months to a year. You are required to keep a planner to log your daily activities and plan out your day which is a waste of time and paper when there are not very many tasks to complete daily besides merchandising, cleaning, and training. The biggest con is how they promote management in the company. Store managers are promoted purely on sales success and having great performance numbers. In reality, there should be an ability to lead metric required for such promotions. The managers that I worked directly under were incompetent in leadership but amazing in sales. They did not know how/want to train their staff. Good people, but terrible leaders. They get all the credit when people in store promote out, when they did very little to build that employee. They leaned heavily on the assistant for store operations so that they could focus on personal sales using exorbitant discounts to close customers. Expect your regional managers to only speak to store managers 95% of the time with assistants getting little to no guidance on how to develop. If you are looking to move up in the company, expect to move across the state/country as in store promotions are extremely rare.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience working for Denver Mattress. I take these concerns seriously. However, I want also to take the opportunity to provide some perspective for you. To not get too lengthy in my response I will do so in bullet point fashion. • Performance is indeed one of the ways we measure success within our organization. We believe that setting performance goals allows us to drive growth and achieve results in the competitive market. It also allows us to measure how our customers’ needs are being met from a distance. • It's also crucial to recognize that our goals have increased over the past couple of years due to unprecedented market conditions. As a company, we strive to adapt and respond to changing dynamics, which may require setting higher targets. This is done to ensure our business sustains and remains competitive in the marketplace. • It can be frustrating to relearn training materials, but change is inevitable, and to say that we change the training materials every six months to one year is hyperbole. I have been with Denver Mattress for nearly 20 years and have only seen a handful of pivots in regard to our sales approach. • Regarding the issue raised about guidance and development, we understand the importance of providing support and guidance to our employees. While Regional Managers primarily communicate with Store Managers, we have various channels in place to assist all team members, including Assistant Managers. We encourage open communication and are always looking for ways to improve upon our leadership development initiatives. • Lastly, we would like to clarify that we wholeheartedly embrace the effectiveness of a planner as a tool for better organization and productivity. We provide planning materials to all our employees free of charge, as we believe that having a structured approach can contribute to individual and team success. We also believe in preparing our employees for success in the future whether it be with us, or with a different organization. Planning and task management are skills that will assist you in almost any career path. I suggest you lean into this practice rather than away from it. I am glad that your experience with Denver Mattress was not entirely negative. I was pleased to read that you found the schedule to be consistent and the pay to be satisfactory. I am confused that you find our company culture to be declining, and I wish you would have reached out before you decided to leave. Once again, I appreciate your feedback and understand that there is always room for improvement. We continuously strive to create a positive, meaningful, and rewarding work environment. Additionally, we endeavor to provide opportunities for growth, development, and career advancement. If you have any specific suggestions or concerns that you would like to discuss further, please feel free to reach out to me directly at 303-566-8177. I wish you the best in all that you aspire to do.

Pros

Had a great start to what seemed to be a great career choice. Great pay. Good company values, and company management. Big shout out to Mike H for bringing me on board. This manager was always on top of things and was a great guy to work for.

Cons

Mike's replacement was not as good. Company insurance is way to high, and sales started slipping along with to many people hired.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your time at Denver Mattress. I’m glad you had some positive experiences during your time here but I would like to address the concerns you listed. I understand you were there during the transition in management and, any time there is a transition, there will be adjustments. In regards to our insurance, we feel what we offer is very competitive in terms of pricing and coverage. We have a deductible which must be met each year but once met, you have 100% coverage. Most other plans still have a percentage out of pocket after the deductible. There are many employees who have undergone extensive medical procedures and only had to pay the deductible. Our staffing in each store is determined so our salespeople are able to make a very good living but also, so our customers get the attention necessary to find the right sleep system. If you would like to discuss this further, please call me at (303) 566-8173.

Pros

The best part of this job was testing out all of the mattresses. It helped me gain an appreciation for the type of mattress I personally used and helped me to sell the right type for each customer.

Cons

Weekends are mandatory, especially over holidays. Commission only pay. And the "secret shoppers" from corporate that cared more about sounding like a robot repeating pre-scripted statements over the sales team being allowed to get to know the customer and their needs.

Thank you for leaving a review about your experience with Denver Mattress. The required hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays) are shown in the ad for the position, stated on the application, and also discussed during the multi-step interview process. Saying that, our schedule for salespeople averages around 42 hours / week, and often includes a short day during the week and opportunities for early outs depending on business. This is a commission-based position and that also listed and discussed in the same ways as the hours. Our commission and bonus structure is very generous and higher than the average retail commission rate. Lastly, we discontinued the secret shopper program in January of this year and there are no plans to reinstate it. We do have a sales presentation we expect all sales associates to learn but it is by no means a script. There are parts which must be memorized during training but we do allow the salespeople to add their personality into it once they have the parts memorized. We understand that the sales process is fluid and every customer is different but we do expect our salespeople work within our framework and follow our process. We are very particular about how our salespeople sell to our customers and we have high standards as to how our customers are treated which is, in part, why we are continually raked as one of the top mattress stores for service. I truly wish you the best in the future. If you would like to discuss this further, please call me at (303) 566-8173. Thank you!
