Sad decline...

Pros

Benefits package is decent. When I first started with ESI, I really enjoyed the company and its values. However, over time as it appeared that being the biggest PBM became the focus, the company lost their way.

Cons

Leadership was terrible overall. It seemed that senior leadership became disengaged with what was actually happening to those on the front line with patients and clients. With that said, it is ironic that in one place I worked for one of the best managers I ever worked for as well as one of the worse. However, most of the managers I had were more task oriented and not truly qualified to manage people. The employee ranking system (bell curve) for reviews is terrible and out-of-date. It only lowered moral around review time and created a "me" or "cya" mentality at any cost and made teamwork less effective as well as some employee actions questionable. Teamwork should be promoted more for the betterment of the company and employees.

The longer you work for this company the more you see its true intent.

Pros

If your a favorite of your manager or you know someone in upper management then your workload and pay rate can increase and you can pretty much cruise while everyone else works. The compensation is pretty decent and worksites are clean.

Cons

If your not part of this favored group, then expect no work life balance, unreasonable expectations and never seeing your family or outside life again. Its always who you know in this company. But honestly this company is all about the bottom dollar, they could care less who gets trampled by the wayside on their mission for profit.

Pros

Short Version: * Ability to change jobs/departments very easily * "Flat" organization - everyone is in the trenches together (in IT, at least) * Good camaraderie (up to a point) * Nice headquarters facility * Clear focus - save $$$ * Good bonuses Longer version: Express Scripts was a great place to learn how large company IT can work. I had the opportunity to work with a multitude of departments and people and got a lot out of that. It really makes a difference whether you are in a good organization or one that is struggling - in the former, you get the resources you need to succeed while in the latter it is a sisyphean effort. Colleagues tend to look out for each other, despite being ranked against each other for raises, bonuses and promotions. Every day could be a new challenge so if you like moving quickly this is a great fit, for a while...

Cons

Short Version: * Very limited promotion ability. It is highly unlikely to get more than one in your career at ESI. * Always oncall - the only times I did not receive calls, emails, and text messages was when I was flying. Though it is not required to always be available, that is the general expectation. * Good people "disappear" while poor performers linger for years (and harm the culture) * Saving money leads to poor outcomes (but everyone acts like this is unexpected) * Force-ranking of all employees * Bonuses can be and are canceled entirely due to factors outside of your control (i.e. you can perform excellently but, due factors entirely out of your control, you receive nothing). Longer Version: At some point most employees notice that the problems we have today have the same root cause as those we had the year before, and the year before that. Chronic rushing and underfunding of IT projects has led to a situation where IT has little credibility with the business and individual employees do not have much to be proud of. As managers, you are expected to promote the strategies and decisions made by senior leadership, despite the fact that "in the trenches" we and our teams have to deal with the fallout. The force-ranking is a real problem. Why ESI still does it while many other companies quietly eliminate these systems is baffling, but with the rapid turnover in our HR department my only conclusion is that the CEO likes the system. Expect to be hung out to dry if you have a public mistake in the last three months of the year and, if you want to do something that will make you a top ("stretch") performer make sure that it is public and, again, in the last three months of the year (earlier than that and it will likely be forgotten).

Pros

Initially, the work environment was encouraging and there was a sense of pride to be had in the work--that didn't last. Management made themselves open at all hours and some managers would even provide you with their personal contact information in case of emergencies, but then they go so far as to try to 'friend' you in social media platforms with the outward intent of merely 'being friends' when they're actually using it to spy on you.

Cons

Management has a habit of lying and making up policies. It is painfully apparent that the least capable and least competent people are chosen to be managers. They have zero qualms with trying to spy on employees through social media platforms. Team Leads are just as bad, sometimes worse. One employee was unable to report what they felt was inappropriate behavior because one of the team leads would come to their cubicle and start playing with their hair like they were some sort of doll; it went unreported because all the managers and leads are all buddy-buddy. Absolutely disgusting. Management and Team Leads don't seem to have any problems cutting corners and breaking state pharmacy laws to simply "get the product out the door". Good luck trying to voice your concern, because you won't be listened to. If you attempt to persist, you become targeted as a 'problem' and you'll find yourself unable to meet any of the already crushing metrics. They will do anything to shut you up and shove you out if you voice an opinion that is even remotely not like theirs. Don't even think about taking a sick day; you'll either not be believed or you'll suddenly find yourself being told that you "should take FMLA". They'll claim that there is "required overtime" but then two days later they'll offer several hundred hours worth of "voluntary time off" (VTO). If you need your work week hours reduced, forget about it, because you'll just be screwed over--and once again, if you voice your opinion at all, you're targeted to be shut up and shoved out. Pay is insulting and pathetic for the workloads and the abuse of lower level employees being forced into working higher level queues. Low level employees are deliberately moved into higher level queues for months at a time but denied the higher level pay that goes with it. And for what is supposed to be a smoking-free property, there sure are a lot of fresh cigarette butts that still litter the outside seating areas and the parking lot.

Pros

When my shift has ended and it's time for me to go home.

Cons

Managers, supervisors, and surprisingly co-workers have a tendency talk to you in a perfunctory manner. It's a cultural which based on meanness, and callousness. And, it's exceedingly rare to find people smiling let alone in good-mood. The lack of leadership skills in management is largely to blame for the despondent, yet stressful work environment. For example, when system is not functioning properly management has a devil-may-care attitude and advise us to do the best with what is operating at the time. Also, when speaking to the patient, brevity is key otherwise you'll be placed on a corrective action plan for talking too long.
