Pros

-- Good employee discounts. -- Food trucks were nice.

Cons

-- Lots of former BoA and Capital One employees in senior and executive roles, especially in the branches. Corporate culture is basically a bank now but with poorer technology, worse pay, and absolutely no brand recognition. We talk about member experience all the time, but $$$ and growth always wins out. Pick one. -- Lack of basic business education among senior leaders. Lots of amateurs hired from unrelated fields with no direct experience, mostly due to below-market comp. Lots of career changers and strong interviewers, but very few seasoned pros at the senior levels being hired in. Long-tenured execs have completely lost touch with the working world at large and say embarrassing things all the time. -- No consequences for poor management and failed projects at upper levels. String of failed IT projects and botched platform updates wreaked havoc for members, yet IT leadership grows by the day. Poor morale and high turnover in the IT/Digital org. Junior employees blamed for terrible execution. -- Recent departures of well liked middle managers in compliance, deposits, and cards due to literally nowhere for them to go. Senior leaders don't make room for advancement. -- No company culture that doesn't come straight out of a TED talk or management book. -- CEO and CFO push growth for reasons nobody knows. Members are getting poor service and platforms and people can't handle the growth, but we keep getting bigger and nobody knows why. We're not getting better, just getting bigger. -- New office out in Hillsboro is very pretty, but is near nothing and doesn't suit 99% of the work that's done. Many more employees are remote now due to the new, further commute defeating the purpose of the move. I spend more time on calls now than I did before. -- Mandatory volunteer hours are well-meaning, but can be annoying to balance with tightening schedules and turns it into a chore.

Thank you for your candid feedback. Your concern for the welfare of our members and your co-workers is evident and appreciated. While I would welcome a direct conversation to discuss some of your observations, I agree with your comments regarding some of the stresses that our unprecedented growth has placed on a number of systems and team members within our organization. As you may know, our expansion has largely been driven by record growth within some of Select Employee Groups (like Microsoft & Amazon) and high member demand for First Tech’s products and services. While this growth has contributed to changes in the work environment for some of our employees, it has also led to more than 253 promotions or advancements in 2017, with an expected 351 in 2018. While we have lots of room for improvement in the way we serve our employees and members, the data tells us that 85% of all employees rank us a “good or great place” to work, while 8 out 10 members would recommend First Tech to friends or family members. -Greg

Toxic "we are family" Culture

Pros

My direct manager is amazing, truly cares about employees and doesnt play favorites. They have been in the job role and is very helpful with questions and issues. CEO is nice and calls you on your birthday. Benefits and flexible hours are good. Working from home huge plus.

Cons

1. With the toxic family culture, upper management are all buddies that spend time together outside work. 2. The cliquiness and favortism is horrible. If upper management doesnt like you, you have a target on your back. The favorite employees are allowed to make mistakes or do minimal work without consequences. 3. Bringing issues up is largely ignored with upper management. They refuse to address the glaring issues but wonder why so many are leaving. They make it a "you" issue. 4. Lack of adequate and accurate procedures make the job very difficult. 5. Dealing with lazy or rude loan officers that arent held accountable because they bring in the money. They are allowed to do whatever or as little as they want without repurcussions. 6. Managements solution to high volume is "work OT" which tosses work/life balance out the window. 7. Promoting to higher levels is encouraged but management puts too high expectations on their seniors. They expect perfection when thrown curveballs with strict close dates. What is the motivation to move up when sacrificing mental health? 8. Lack of communication and xonsistent information between departments and clueless managers who dont know anything. Ask 3 managers the same question and get 3 different answers. Better off going to a coworkers.

Pros

My coworkers were amazing and come from a diverse background. The members are fantastic, savvy and ambitious. The pay was good and benefits are industry standard.

Cons

Pretty much everything else. I feel as though I was "catfished" by First Tech. When I first was hired there (after nearly a decade of experience in banks) I was assured that the culture was a night and day difference from what I was used to. At first I believed it, but it soon became clear that this was just another money-grubbing heartless organization. The focus is only on the numbers. I'm not naive enough to believe that numbers are unimportant, but they should be balanced with other priorities such as member satisfaction and employees' worth. Even as a top performer at times, I felt replaceable. From my limited exposure to top level executives, I really think they don't even know the extent of dissatisfaction that runs through the retail operations of the credit union. I think the problem lies with middle management. Almost all of the middle management I engaged with are from Bank of America and it shows. BofA initiatives are championed and people are promoted because of them because they're so "innovative" and "revolutionary". Well, no, that's the same thing we were doing at BofA years ago. Management is not open to feedback unless it's 100% positive. If you have constructive feedback, you are looked at as a problem child who "doesn't live the values" of First Tech. So much is expected of you and with so little time to do it after handling all the other responsibilities of your position. Everyone I worked with either hated it, left, or was looking for another opportunity. And in the time since I've left, I've only heard it's getting worse. As a side note, I once had a co-worker that was so toxic that they ruined the morale in our branch. What happened to them? They were promoted to prevent the "negative turnover" of firing them. Disgusting.
