Pros

You don't have to see the tools you work for very often!

Cons

The novelty of working remotely wears off quickly once you realize you will not be actually using your experience and expertise to teach students who need you. Rather, you become simply a facilitator for a credit mill. The idea is that courses are basically online textbooks where students login and read and submit work for you to grade. The concept isn't bad except that the course/text would NEVER pass muster as an actual academic textbook. If taught in a physical classroom, you could cover an entire FLVS course in four to six weeks. There is a limit though...two weeks! That is the minimum they can, and do, get away with. The brevity of the coursework and the extremely low bar for quality submissions attract lots of students. At FLVS, fast completions and minimal accountability are the predominant virtues. It's certainly not in the best interests of students. It is however in the best interests of FLVS's bottom line or "return on investment." The directors and managers never...ever...reflect on how much learning is happening. But there is intense interest in how many course completions can be accomplished in the fewest number of weeks. Again, the "bottom line" is the only concern. As an employee you will be depressed if teaching is a profession you really care about. You will also be angry a lot of the time...at least when you can generate the energy to be angry. FLVS assumes you are always trying to get over (scamming your way through is a corporate value so it's natural I guess for the managers to assume that). The result is that you will be monitored closely and pressured to work 70 hours a week. Read the negative reviews here on Glassdoor for a rundown of all of the details of why anyone who can, gets away from this company as quickly as possible.

Pros

Work from home, Benefits are good for a school district. Did I say work from home. This is about it.

Cons

Low pay for hours worked Available 8 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week Oppressive policies towards teachers Unfair and unattainable evaluation metrics Very little professional respect HR Department only exists to terminate employees No Union Intimidation and Fear used as motivation FL DOE does not care how teachers are treated, I called and complained and nothing came of it. You are an Island with FLVS Administration constantly jumping on you to try and sink you Course loads double what a traditional school teacher has. Has become "all about money" not education Where the money goes no one seems to know as it is not on teacher's salaries Teachers if you are thinking of working here, please think about it hard as unless you want no home life this is not even an average place to work.

Pros

Working from home, or anywhere with wifi.

Cons

I worked FT for this company for 8 years and left by my own choice. Finally, I have my life back. I know for a fact there are employees whose job is to monitor what is being said about FLVS on social media. It is also their job to write wonderful reviews of this company in an attempt to counter what is being said by other negative reviewers. There is no life/work balance. How can there be with the number of students you are required to serve? My last semester there I had 402 students in my class(and no, I wasn't teaching Drivers Ed). That number is impossible to manage There is no student-teacher relationship. It's like herding cattle rather than teaching. You will put in way over 40 hours a week out of fear of losing your job. A contract means nothing to this company. They can terminate you at any time, for any reason. It's impossible to keep up with the ever changing expectations. FLVS is only concerned with how many students they complete and they don't care what has to happen to complete that student. On more than one occasion I have attempted to fail a student, who did not meet the requirements of the class, and was told I needed to 'do whatever it takes' for the student to pass. They are interested in the bottom line and not doing what's in the best interest of the student. I could spend a great deal of time discussing the negative aspects of FLVS, but it's just not worth my time. If you are considering a position with this company, think long and hard before leaving your current place of employment.
