TOXIC Instructional Leader and Environment

Pros

Most of the other teachers are there for the right reasons and really care about the students and their co-workers.

Cons

Oh where shall I start???? They SAY it's a flexible work environment but there is little flexibility when you're micromanaged and threatened with firing over data numbers. It's always about the data. I was not a teacher. I was a PHONE HARASSER to students and I hated that. It doesn't matter if a student works weeks ahead so that they can then take time off to work on other courses. If the DATA shows they are not active I was forced to call and harass them about having to work.... even if they were way ahead. It was sooo ILLOGICAL. They control your FREE TIME... the time you are NOT CONTRACTED. Teachers are not allowed to work any other job... even if it's just a weekend job to supplement their income and Lord knows teachers need to do that to survive. You better not with FLVS because they will fire you. You are only allowed to be enslaved to their company at all times.

Highly Effective Means Nothing

Pros

Work from home opportunities/ remote employment.

Cons

FLVS requires work from 8am-8pm and they will assign those who are effective and efficient busy work to make sure that you are at your desk 12 hours. Management showed no interest in individualizing education or in making sure that learning goals were met. They were interested in pushing students through quickly. Teachers have close to 200 students in their classrooms and can wake up daily to 50-100 assignments that require grading. Managers want 40-50 out-going calls each day, and also expect 24/7 responsiveness to texts and emails. Expect health problems, like weight gain, blood pressure irregularity, etc from being seated for 12 hours a day. The salary increases are intermittently frozen. Being highly effective does not guarantee your continued employment, advancement, or increase in salary. If you have been with FLVS for a while and are paid higher than the minimum, they may find a reason to fire you or force you to resign to higher a cheaper replacement. If you are a mom of a young child, expect to be targeted. The need for work-life balance is seen as a problem among some managers. "Everyone is replaceable" was the tagline my last manager repeatedly stated.

Pros

Work from home. Good initial training provided.

Cons

Unrealistic demands. Expected to work 60+ hours a week. Stressful. Pushing students through because of $$$.
