Pros

I normally wouldn't post a review of a company I currently work for, but I felt the need to step up to counter a couple of opinions I’ve seen expressed here. I’ve worked for Foundation Software for a large part of my career and have seen the company grow from just a handful of people to several hundred. Though I work as a software developer, I’ve had many opportunities over the years to work with a variety of departments and have an impact on the growth and success of the company. I think the key characteristic of the people who are successful and happy here is being a self-starter. If you just want a job and wait for things to come to you, you’ll end up with just a job, but if you are self-managing, curious and inquisitive as to how a successful company actually works, and have ideas and want to contribute, you’ll have a rewarding career and be part of something bigger than your immediate job title. The company offers the standard perks of most modern software companies (pop, snacks, nice benefits package, relaxed environment, etc.) and some neat extras like a concierge service. Compensation is good, particularly if you invest yourself in the company. We even have our own training programs where - if you have the aptitude but not the formal education – we’ll pay you to learn. But I think the best perk is being part of a company with a strong culture and sense of community, where there are very few politics, where we actively fight the corporate mentality, and we recognize we’re all contributing to deliver a great product to our customers.

Cons

We keep running out of diet coke (victim of our own rapid growth).

Pros

Comfortable atmosphere Approachable Management Management always feels like it cares about their employees Fantastic perks (free soda and snacks or time with a personal trainer at the on site gym) (Usually) Good balance of empowered employees and strong management

Cons

Nepotism is the name of the game Pay is all over the place, but generally low Beware of implied (but not explicit) promises from management, particularly around raise season. Technical side can either be a great place to grow as a young developer or a great way to crush your spirit depending on your disposition and what you're interested in doing with your career later. Management can either be fantastically progressive or will go out of their way to stonewall you in the name of protecting the old guard from change, sounds something like "it's worked well for the past x years". General quality of developers varies wildly due to an attitude of "home grown employees are the best employees". It either creates great developers with a fantastic domain knowledge, or senior architects that can't grasp the difference between HTML and HTTP. Full Microsoft Stack, so that's either valuable career building or terrible depending on your stance and desires going forward.

Pros

Casual environment/ no dress code, relaxed atmosphere, approachable management, on site gym and personal trainer, fitness classes, rec center membership, concierge service, decent benefits, somewhat flexible hours, room to advance or change departments/ jobs, company lunches and events, pro sport ticket raffles. If you are a good cultural fit and you are bright and talented, but you are not happy in your current position, they will try to find another place for you in the company. I did get the sense that management cared about me as a person and about whether or not I was happy there. The CEO is very friendly and personable and he obviously cares deeply about the company and its employees.

Cons

The down side to the loose atmosphere is that (at times) it felt like some rules applied to some but not others. For example, working from home was discouraged/frowned upon but some seemed to do it regularly. If you are quiet and/or not part of the "popular" crowd, you are not as likely to be recognized for your work and this can sometimes make you feel that your work is unappreciated and undervalued compared to others. Re: free snacks-- it's hard to complain about free food, but it's mostly junk food-- sugary drinks, salty/fatty snacks, donuts, etc. This is at odds with the push for health/fitness. *Re: Nepotism that other reviewers have mentioned-- it is real, but to be fair they do not try to hide it and in fact are quite open about the fact that they like to hire (bright, talented) people who have connections to the company. Their reasoning is that if you have ties there-- friends or relatives who are happy there-- then you will be more likely to fit the culture and to like it enough to stay. This can be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it. Certainly if you benefit from it, you'll see it as a good thing, but if you feel someone got special treatment that they did not deserve because of it, you'll see it as a bad thing.
