Pros

- You have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with exceptional individuals who are experts in their respective fields, from whom you can learn a great deal.

Cons

Upon joining this company, it felt like a dream come true, and for slightly more than a year, that sentiment remained true-until the arrival of new management. I can't speak on behalf of individuals beyond the sales team, but within our sales department, very little from our management surprises us anymore, and sadly, it's rarely in a positive light. To say the environment is toxic would be an understatement. My everyday routine consists of micro-management, highly unrealistic expectations, a dearth of transparency and trust, a relentless influx of information, perpetually shifting priorities, chaos, miscommunication, and an overwhelming, unreasonable amount of pressure that continually accumulates. This has become the norm at work now. Not to mention the dismissals and resignations left and right. It's very disappointing to see such a great, inspiring, modern, people oriented and innovative sales organisation turn into such a toxic turmoil of never ending conflicts, politics, and disheartened individuals, losing sight of it's core values and causing unnecessary distress among its team members. It was also very surprising to see how quickly it all went downhill and how just a few managers can have such a tremendous impact on an entire organisation.

Pros

The people itself in the team (not Management) are amazing. I made good friends there. Other departments besides Sales are great with inspiring leaders and hardworking, smart and top-notch people.

Cons

I joined GitLab with high hopes, drawn in by its reputation as a pioneering company in the tech industry. Unfortunately, my experience as an Account Executive was deeply disappointing, characterized by toxic management, unattainable targets, and an atmosphere of intransparency and favoritism. The management at GitLab is exceptionally toxic, leading with an ego and fostering an environment of distrust and anxiety among employees. Layoffs are happening, and the fear of being next looms constantly. Middle management is notorious for micromanaging, leaving little room for autonomy or creativity in executing tasks. Administrative tasks are more important than actually selling. Communication from management to the team is poor, with crucial information often withheld or selectively shared, breeding further mistrust. One of the most demoralizing aspects of working at GitLab is the unreasonably high sales targets that are set, which are for 90% of the team impossible to achieve. Teams are on average on 50% attainment. Despite putting in considerable effort, it quickly becomes apparent that success is not rewarded, and failure is met with harsh criticism rather than support or constructive feedback. Furthermore, there is blatant favoritism within the team, with certain individuals receiving preferential treatment while others are unfairly sidelined. This culture of favoritism only serves to deepen the sense of disillusionment and takes away any remaining trust in the organization. Moreover, there is a lack of transparency in the Sales Department, particularly concerning decision-making processes and future plans. Middle management keeps employees in the dark, leaving them feeling disconnected and undervalued. It's disheartening to witness the decline of a company that once held such promise. While some may cling to nostalgic memories of GitLab's past, the reality is that it has devolved into a toxic work environment where loyalty is nonexistent and management prioritizes appearances over the well-being of its employees. In conclusion, my time at GitLab was led by disappointment and frustration. I would caution anyone considering joining the organization to carefully evaluate the work culture and management practices before making a commitment. GitLab may have a strong reputation in the industry, but beneath the surface lies a company that has lost its way.

Pros

I finally found a company that is 100% remote and a company that makes that work really well. I've only been here a couple of months by now and what I've seen so far is wall to wall great. The warmth, helpfulness and openness I've experienced so far is almost unreal. The culture of GitLab which is about Collaboration and Transparency and a lot of other things, is pure magic. Everyone shares and cares. I'd say the pay is really good as well :-) I'd recommend anyone to apply for a job here at GitLab

Cons

As I've said, I've only been here a couple of months and so far I've yet to find anything on the minus side. One thing that is on the plus side that can be pretty overwhelming if you're not used to it though, is the Transparency. That kind of takes you by surprise sometimes and you sometimes feel lost as to knowing how to act and what to do. I guess that "Downside" will evaporate over time as I learn how to do it the GitLab way. It's more me coming from more closed cultures than GitLab actually :)

Pros

GitLab is a good DevOps tool, and if you have the initiative, you can learn a lot from your customers and colleagues. You get to know great people who love technology and want to improve the developer experience.

Cons

A lack of diversity within the Customer Success management group is leading to employee dissatisfaction, particularly among Black and Brown team members. This has negatively impact team morale and performance. A lack of transparency and open communication hinders collaboration within this team. Managers operate in an exclusive circle, favoring their own ideas and discouraging constructive criticism from team members.

Pros

GitLab is an amazing company to work for, with a fully remote culture that values autonomy, transparency, and collaboration. The flexibility it offers is a huge advantage, allowing for a great work-life balance. There are plenty of opportunities for personal and professional growth, with an environment that encourages knowledge sharing and trying out new ideas. The company is also at the forefront of technology, working on cutting-edge solutions like the GitLab Duo AI suite. Leadership is approachable and supportive, fostering a positive work atmosphere.

Cons

As with any remote-first company, communication can sometimes be challenging, and it requires strong self-discipline to stay organized. However, the company provides excellent resources to help manage this

Pros

Unlimited PTO they actually allow you to use, transparency first culture, amazing product you can stand behind.

Cons

Sometimes the company follows the “iteration” value too much and gets things out before they’re fully baked which results in some chaos. There’s also very little opportunity for upward mobility, the company seems to prefer to hire from the outside rather than promote from within

-Great diversity of hardworking and efficient-minded people -Transparency is one of the top pillars here and they fully demonstrate that -Aims for all employees to use inclusive mindset and language -Fully remote environment -Processes are straight forward and easy to follow -Meetings are accurately timed and team members are expected to show up prepared -Overall they've made the remote environment easy to navigate and accomplish your goals in a realistic+efficient way -Amazing compensation and benefits

Cons

Much like all remote environments, it can sometimes feel difficult to connect with others on a personal level. However, some orgs plan annual in-person off sites that help with relationship building.

Pros

It has truly been an amazing experience right from the first TA call. The overall process took a little over a month. TA team has maintained overall transparency. But this culture is embedded in Gitlab everywhere. You can read how the company operates on Public Handbook. It truly fosters the open source culture. Love being part of such a great organization.

Cons

Nothing major as as of now. Onboarding can be a bit challenging since Gitlab operates in ~65 countries. There are lots of different systems, documents that may be overwhelming at first but the team supports in every way. I will review my experience in the next 3 months.
