A good place but not a great place to work

Pros

- Ambitious plans for the company with a good business outlook - Beautiful, game-changing product that could revolutionize the industry - People are generally good intentioned

Cons

- Company motto is along the lines of "putting people first" but the reality is something closer to "putting customers first". A lot of strategy and actions are geared towards acquiring new customers but not on developing people internally. There is unclear career growth. - Values are highlighted and touted regularly but sometimes there is a lack of follow-through (transparency about people being let go, prioritizing short term sprints over long term goals) For a company that is so people and values driven, Gusto falls short (not always, but sometimes) and a lot of the unhappiness from people stems from the fact that there are very high expectations on how the company should operate. These expectations have been missed more frequently as the company has grown exponentially. - A lot of first time managers that have good intentions but don't have the experience to develop people on their teams.

We’d love to connect with you directly as to how we can explore ideas on how to dogfood more and any other ideas you have. Building out career development is really important to us, and is a priority in 2016 to continue building out. Last year was just scratching the surface with manager (PE) training, feedback workshops, and our first performance development program. With the transparency aspect, we hope that AMAs and pulse surveys can be an avenue for asking questions internally, and in addition, encourage you to ask your PE and / or the People team. Thank you so much for your feedback!

Thank you for your feedback on being an employee at Gusto. We would love to understand your perspective better and talk about ways we can improve the concerns you raised. Related to writing Glassdoor reviews, we very much appreciate the feedback and apologies for any miscommunication - it’s intended to be specific to reviewing the interview experience - moving forward, we’ll ask for this feedback in training run by our recruiting team to avoid this misunderstanding. We have grown quickly over the last few months, with 80% of the company having started in the last 12 months. Through AMAs, bi-weekly company meetings, regular surveys and hopefully the ability to speak directly and honestly with leadership or the People team, we hope there are avenues to share these opinions internally as well. Developing our people is a major focus in 2016, and we have only really scratched the surface thus far. We hope you’ll be candid with us internally and reach out, as we’d love to partner with you to improve not only your experience, but the experience of everyone at Gusto, too.

Pros

Management really invests the time to ensure that you are growing. Feedback and transparency is a must in order to progress and Gusto does this beautifully. I've been working here for over a year and despite coming into this with extensive technical experience, I feel like this past year I have learned so much.

Cons

Despite being at 300 employees, we are still a start-up and growing so fast that it's difficult to meet and greet all of the new faces.

Happy to hear that you have had such a positive experience work at Gusto. We are continuously looking for ways to ensure that both transparency and feedback are part of our work style and culture. By having both of these pieces in place, we hope that it allows you to truly feel like an owner of the company. As we continue to grow, it will be more challenging to get to know every person in the company; however, in 2016, expect more community building events and activities, which will help us all meet new faces. As always, if you should have any suggestions or thoughts on how we can improve this, please do not hesitate to reach out to the People Team.
