Pros

Flexible hours. HS diploma required. No drug test. If you are bilingual Eng/Span you will have a much stronger chance of being hired. If you are interested in starting your own tax prep business, you could work 2 or 3 seasons at H&R Block to learn the basics before striking out on your own. If you're lucky, you will be assigned to an office whose manager is reasonably competent and ethical.

Cons

H&R Block has extremely low standards for office managers and district managers. In three seasons I had three district managers and two office managers. One district manger had no tax prep experience and had formerly managed a Pay-Less shoe store. One office manager insisted that I lie to customers in order to obtain their signatures on various consent forms in order to improve our office's performance numbers. (Google "H&R Block Fraud Identity Theft" for other examples ethical lapses by H&R Block managers.) . This is a sales job, with lots of pressure to sell H&R Block's high priced financial products, such as their "Peace of Mind" audit insurance, "Emerald Card" pre-paid debit card and others. You will be paid a low hourly wage with possible commission based on how much revenue you generate. There are no benefits of any kind, except that you are allowed to do your own tax return and you don't have to pay for it. . The offices that generate the most revenue are located in low-income communities. Customers who lack financial sophistication, are poorly educated or have a language barrier are ideal clients. They often will receive a very large refund thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit designed to help low-income working families. It's much easier to grab a chunk of of that refund when the client doesn't understand what's going on.

The co-workers here are very nice and friendly, they are willing to help new employees.

Cons

When I did the interview with the company, the process time period was a little bit long, and the respond of the company was not very fast.
