Pros

Learn about old and new tax laws and deductions/credits; beneficial for doing one's own taxes

Cons

My particular store manager was of little help. I relied on my coworkers to help me learn the finer details of the software system as well as specific interpretations of certain tax laws. Shyness will prevent you from learning.

Pros

Good retirement job. Opportunity to help other people with their taxes

Cons

Since new management took over three years ago, their attitude toward tax preparers has been to treat us as the "enemy". They keep emphasizing that the employees are the reason behind the great drop off of clients coming to HR Block (their Kansas City provincial minds don't grasp new technologies or how to apply them to tax preparation). We get complaints from clients that the fees are too high but management ignores this complaint from tax preparers and continues to increase them every year by 5-6 % . Example of management attitude: They increase customer fees by 4 % and then slide out our tax preparers commission scale by 6 %. Essentially we now have to make an extra two percent client fees to match last years pay! Every year they keep reorganizing the districts and which offices are in the district. Three years , three different districts, managers, polices - Total disorganization at the top. New management does not know what it is doing as every year they have a new program/gimmick that fails! They have a new feature or promotion but don't advertise it to the public and then wonder why it FAILS.

Pros

They have a thorough and comprehensive training program that seems to be able to prepare just about anyone to prepare taxes. Flexible hours, office can be fun if you get assigned to the right one. Too bad the home tax software is so easy to use that most people are doing their own taxes now (good for taxpayers, not so good for paid tax preparers).

Cons

Training program and progression system seems to be too rigid – does not consider past experience / education very much when you begin with company. If you return to work for them over multiple seasons and build a solid client base, you might get paid well; however, if you leave the area and your client base, you have to start from square one again (and pay at square one is ridiculously low).
