Pros
- Best culture I've ever experienced at a company. People are happy, helpful, and operate with integrity, which is important in our business. They're also intelligent and humble.
- Leadership team is experienced, accessible, values and supports employees, and works towards solutions with transparency. This is especially important in times of instability (hello COVID-19)!
- The hacker community is inspiring. We have a lot of work to do in this space, but we're in excellent company and making meaningful contributions to hacker education and to companies' security.
- Our customers are amazing to work with, and span many industries, geographies, and sizes. If you're in a customer-facing role, there's no shortage of fun projects and problems to solve.
- Fiscally responsible (from my limited visibility). Profitability and long-term growth are a company-wide focus, which makes me feel good about HackerOne's future prospects. The Employee Success team does a good job of balancing this with perks that people have come to expect at mature startups (wellness stipend, commuter benefits, 1x/week catered lunch, etc.).
- Work-life balance and trust. You won't be micromanaged here, but you'll also be expected to do your work, and do it well. Remote and parent-friendly.
- The company is doing more to develop people professionally: Management and interview training, well-executed performance review cycles, and career ladders with parallel growth tracks (manager and individual contributor).
Cons
- Cross-functional alignment and communication is a work in progress, but that's actively being addressed.
- Pay is fair and on par with the market but if you're maximizing for a top-of-the-range salary, this may not be the right place (especially in the bay area). On the flip side, the people who join tend to be mission-driven and value culture, transparency, growth, etc. so they stick around.
- No match on 401k. Goes back to the focus on fiscal responsibility while we're in the growth / maturity stage.
