Just don't assume it's mental health company

Pros

The mission to build and affordable mental healthcare system that everyone can access is motivating and could be a real source of pride if executed better

Cons

It's pretty unbelievable that the company proposes to be a "mental health company". Spoiler, the company's actual focus is maximizing $$ by billing for mental health services,. Culturally it actually functions as an immature fintech company and toxicity thrives. Unfortunately, the exec team isn't strong enough to see that there's a huge opportunity to align company culture and actions to the core of the mission. This would mean investing in the mission beyond immediate revenue growth. And generally the company's strategic muscles are weak. If you don't care about working in an ethical and enjoyable environment, at least prepare yourself to work overtime to keep up in a disorganized environment where egos reign supreme and everyone is out for themselves. It's truly a madhouse .

Pros

- Really wonderful managers who care about their direct reports and invest in their professional development - An important mission and product that is helping therapists grow their private practice and make therapy more affordable - A really awesome group of coworkers - Transparency into how the business is run and what’s going on behind the scenes – more so than I’ve ever seen at a company - Free therapy - Good benefits: unlimited PTO (although whether people feel empowered to take it is a different story), really low healthcare premiums

Cons

- They say that they pay at the 75th percentile for each role, but compared to roles at similar companies our teams make much less, especially the more junior roles. In classic startup fashion, you're working 3 jobs and getting paid one. - They weaponize the mission – you’ll frequently hear things like “I took a paycut to work here because I was excited about the mission” when people bring up that they’re unhappy with the pay. The undertone is also "we need to work an ungodly amount in order to hit our ridiculously ambitious goals..... for the mission". - Burnout is unbelievable and it’s becoming an issue at the company. The negativity is pervasive and starting to border on toxic. Even the CEO and Cofounder are starting to seem burnt out in meetings. - We're growing SO fast… and that means things are breaking. The growth team is growing x3 faster than the operations team, so there isn’t enough support to sustain the growth. This is leading to unhappy customers and burnt out employees. - The lack of diversity is frankly unforgivable, especially given that we work in the mental healthcare space.

Run is an understatement

Pros

The “lower level” employees are great.

Cons

Leadership is absolutely horrible. The CEO did a keynote speech at the company retreat. The AV team was experiencing some technical issues and he stopped his speech multiple times to publicly berate the AV team in front of 200+ people. I understand it being frustrating, but it was cruel. He even said “If I could rate you, I’d give you zero stars.” Truly an awful human being who doesn’t care about the mental health of anyone but himself. Speaking of being a mental health company with absolutely zero regard for the mental health of their employees. They recently updated their “cultural principles” that really show the proof of it. Things like “the best thing for the company is to care more about company success than your individual success.” “Company goals are always around customer and business objectives - never employee sentiment or experience.” The best one: “If you’re looking for optimizing work-life balance, this isn’t the place for you.”
