Long-time employees laid off along with newbies

Pros

Good starting salary, good office location at Galleria. Cheap vending machine prices and other break room amenities.

Cons

Yearly layoff during holiday season. Secretive management policies. Very low employee morale. No job security. Yearly merit raises eliminated in favor of employee "performance bonus" but criteria makes it impossible for many employees to qualify. No room for promotion except for the "select few". Medseek has a terrible reputation among the Birmingham HR community. So many employees come and go, it's a running joke that no one bothers to learn the new employees' names.

Great Vision, Great People, Need Different Comp Plan

Pros

MedSeek has a great market vision with its suite of products. My teammates are hard workers and are passionate. The technology stack is leading-edge and definitely a skill-set enhancer. The potential to be a market leader is definitely within MedSeek's reach. I am very excited about the future.

Cons

Being at MedSeek for just over a year, I don't have the history or baggage. There seems to be a looming morale issue. It is slowly dissipating, but it is still there. The “bonus plan / no merit increases” doesn't really work for engineers. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy receiving bonuses, but I would rather have set merit increases.

Pros

Hard work is rewarded and noticed. Promotions are frequent for high performers. Great office environment with good people to work with. Ping pong table in the break room. Discounted snacks and sodas. Frequent bonuses for hard workers. All bank holidays are MEDSEEK holidays (there's a lot of them). Weekly study groups available to all employees on leadership, personal development, etc. The User eXperience group has a bi-weekly "recess" where we have a show and tell of what projects we are working on or new technologies and ideas we have come across.

Cons

No salary bumps outside of promotions/great performance reviews. It is not a place you can sit idly by, punch your time card for your 8-5 and collect your paycheck. The layoffs in December were a tough time as well and there has been some uneasiness with people since then. The acquisition by Silver Lake is viewed by many as a negative thing. I came on board after the initial round of layoffs in the early Spring of 2013, so maybe I'm not as jaded as some.
