Pros

I have been working for JGA for almost two years now. The company has offered me a great potential to learn and develop as an engineer in a very friendly and social team, whilst being very flexible with my life work balance. Hard work pays well, with great salary and career progression potential at much earlier stages than other engineering disciplines. Working hours are good. Like all similar fields, there are times where a few more hours in the office are needed, however this is well appreciated and made up for with flexibility (within reason) to take paid time off for personal reasons (I.e doctors appointment). Due to being part of a much larger parent company, there is the best of both worlds, as there is potential to work in different offices globally, with an unlimited access to technical data and knowledge, whilst still enjoying the benefits of smaller companies such as opportunity to advance, flexibility, a more interpersonal work place culture, and being able to learn several different aspects of the business. Would definitely recommend to someone looking to become a competent fire engineer, and who would like to work for a respectable and ethical company.

Cons

None so far after 2 years.

Pros

Good career progression and great support from senior staff in development of knowledge and skills. Senior staff constantly spend time with junior engineers to help educate and assist with their development. Company wide mentoring program with each new engineer paired with a senior engineer who mentors and assist the new starter in their development. Early opportunity to get involved with wide range of projects and go out of the office to meetings, workshops and site visits. Very good social working environment with friendly and young team. The team get on very well and make the job very enjoyable often socialising outside of work and typically all going to the local pub on a Friday. Constant opportunity to work with all members of the team rather than specialist small groups. This allows engineers to pick up new skills and ways of working from a large number of experienced and knowledgeable staff. Opportunity to work with colleagues in other offices and also potential to complete secondments in various offices across the group. Recently acquired by Jensen Hughes which has resulted in an improvement in the IT facilities and further access to technical resources and staff in the US.

Cons

Company formal social events have reduced since originally joined the company. As with most construction related jobs can result in long hours and in order to meet client deadlines. Senior staff generally good at keeping on top of workloads and distributing work although there is no formal flexi-time policy in place. Fairly basic benefits package in comparison to other companies and primary focus on salary. Office facilities fairly standard and can get very warm in the office during the summer.

Pros

I have been working with JGA for over 7 years; previous to this post I worked in large multidisciplinary company. One of JGA's strengths is that employees are treated on an individual basis, and there is a real sense of being listened to which I didn't experience in previous jobs. The support and guidance I received (and continue to receive) quickly helped me to become a chartered engineer and have allowed me to continue developing skills directly and indirectly related to my duties. There are great career development opportunities within JGA, including the possibility of working in one of the many offices within the UK and Ireland. I find my job stimulating and immersive. There are a range of different projects which means you get wide-ranging experience across all the tasks involved. This is an important element of keeping any career interesting, as no two projects are ever the same. It isn't confined to office work either, there are also visits to construction sites which bring another element of variety to the working week. The best thing about JGA, however, are the people with whom you work. There is a supportive culture, management are easily approachable and there is a spirit of co-operation that makes for an environment that is both pleasant and rewarding to work in.

Cons

No major cons to speak of.
