Pros

Employees are all remote & the company does send nice gift boxes occasionally to celebrate milestones. Gift boxes contain small desserts &/or company T-Shirts.

Cons

The leadership is astonishingly incompetent. I didn't meet anyone in leadership that had any prior insurance experience. There were no year end meetings to discuss performance &/or opportunities... no one knew if there would be any year end raise until a few days beforehand. There were compliance issues that inexperienced managers had no idea how to handle. There was very little advancement opportunities, only because the managers had no management experience, resulting in high turnover. The benefits were not ideal & the pay was low.

Pros

There's still a small portion of kin that has great people. The benefits are also good.

Cons

-The advertise that they promote within but that is false as you rarely ever get to see anyone be promoted. The only people that did get promoted within are OGs who started back when kin had a handful of employees. The worst part is they hire from outside and have people who wanted the promotion, train the new hires. Again, this is across all departments as well. -Upper management doesn't care about anything but numbers and it's evident when people go to them and are quickly dismissed. -People are afraid to be honest. We have lattice reviews that go on every quarter, but people can't be open as the managers can read the reviews and quickly figure out who it is. Then there's another website they use that's supposed to also be anonymous, but we all suspect that it's not. -There's disrespect to certain departments such as CS. -When you volunteer to be part of a project you're put to do all the work and never get credit for it. This goes across all departments both on the sales and the tech side. -They put you to do work that is outside of your job description and you don't get compensated for it. If you even bring it up and ask for compensation for the extra work you get dismissed and get gaslighted into them saying they the opportunity is worth more and you should be grateful for even being considered. -A lot of people that did speak up for others are no longer with kin and its due to either them getting tired of speaking up without being hear or they got demoted or placed in a bogus made up role. -They waste money on useless things such as the "tacos" which is a platform that keeps track of how many taco emojis you receive. Not only do a handful of people use it, but that's money that could be going to people's pockets to keep them happy. -They did nothing to maintain loyal and caring employees. After speaking to people who have quit (all from different departments including uw,sales, cs, prod, etc) they all admitted to being undervalued and underpayed. -They claim to care about the culture but it all feels like it's just to claim that they're trying.

It's honestly been great working here and I don't have a bad thing to say. Best place I've worked in my professional career.

Pros

Management is very clear, peers want to see you succeed and overall it is a great hyper-growth environment. It is a very demanding and goal-oriented job.

Cons

None. Sometimes updates take forever to happen but that is more a product/tech problem

Pros

Team dynamic, company culture, incentives for standing out

Cons

Growing pains, Customer Service doesn’t get a lot of the rewards of Sales, management can be really lacking in direction, wants to be diverse and inclusive, but often it’s not as much as it should be.

Cracks in the Foundation

Pros

Remote organization a plus during COVID. My teammates have been exceptional to work with: supportive, kind, and hard working people dedicated to solving problems. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Kin touts diversity and inclusion as a core value, but it is simply something to be talked about, and never to be followed-through on. If you ask why, HR says it's a "leading question" that they don't want to talk about. Compensation isn't the worst, but you can certainly make more money somewhere else with a lot less headache and frustration. Benefits aren't anything to write home about. If you work toward a promotion, you have a better chance of achieving it if you are white. Alternatively, you can easily take on a team title for extra responsibility, but with no extra compensation. Kin is not invested in the growth of their employees. Leadership is extremely hands off. The key to success is: ship your tickets, don't ask too many questions, and don't make anything their problem. Kin claims it has a blameless culture, which translates to no one gets blamed until something goes wrong - and it's rarely leadership to blame. Management has also demonstrated seriously questionable behaviors regarding people of color, where making discriminatory and racist comments is only the tip of the iceberg. A job at Kin is just a layover on the way to a real software company.

Pros

There are some nice people at Kin.

Cons

The business model does not work. I find it hard to believe that Kin will ever become profitable as a result. The work environment is quite toxic and "Managers" are overworked and as a result, literally don't respond when you reach out to them. The training is a train wreck. You are given so much to learn in back-to-back sessions, that it's literally impossible to retain because it's tremendous information overload. The trainers are snarky and seem exasperated that you can't possibly learn everything. I passed my licensing exams on the first try, however because the training is so extensive - with none of it being "actionable" in real time, it was impossible to have the needed information to pass onto the customer. The toxicity of management is palpable. It's a churn & burn culture and I feel sorry for people who have to work there and so glad after six months I realized it was all smoke & mirrors and found a good job.

Pros

The people and culture are amazing! Competitive commission structure and co-workers are always willing to help. Management actually listens to your concerns, problems, issues and implements plans to address them. If you show up and do your job, you will be rewarded.

Cons

You just have to be flexible with change.
