Pros

They have plenty of work to be done. The company has instant name recognition and you can find their products anywhere. NASDAQ listed.

Cons

I was one of two tech writers. Not for the product, for the entire company. And I think the other one left right after I did. This comes from the CEO himself: Technical Writing is not important. Now I do not know how a software company can compete without documentation. How do they expect anyone to know the product? It seems like the focus of the company is to shove a new product out the door just to meet some deadline, but then to never support it. The experience there went like this: product released without doc, customers cannot figure something out, support doesn't know anything about the product, so it gets escalated to development, where someone with knowledge explains how it works. This is completely unprofessional. The problem is that there is absolutely no training at all. If you start as a tech writer, you will be thrown right in to create documentation. I don't understand the product because I am new, so how can I write about it? There is no process for anything, and there's just a general lack of productivity at the place. Check out other tech writing positions in the area. $60, 70, and 90k are common salaries. At micros it is about half of this. Finally, there is no way to do work outside the 8-5 schedule, and they charge vacation or sick time for things like doctors appointments.

Pros

They will hire you when nobody else will because they can pay you less. I liked the location. Typically job security is very good there, since they always have less employees then they needed to start with and it is after all a stable money making company.

Cons

Employee are treated like naughty children and paid like them too. Here is a great example: The CEO at least once counted cars in the parking lot at 8AM. Noticing that too many people were not there or still rolling in he walked the floors looking for the empty cubicles. He then chastised the managers at the Help Desk where the most desks were empty. This would be the 24/7 365 help desk, where only a fraction of the employees actually come in at 8am Mon-Fri.

Pros

The products they work on are pretty neat even though they barely hire enough staff to work on them. Company has good name recognition.

Cons

Your every task will be micro managed. Google allows 20% of an employees time to be used for finding ways to improve things. Micros never improves because they don't want employees to have time to do anything. This idea from google would not be adopted at Micros because they operate in an environment that is 4 or 5 decades old. Employees are treated terribly. You must work 8-5 with lunch from 12-1 with no consideration for flex hours. The corporate policy is that telecommuting is strictly forbidden. Numerous studies show telecommuting is advantageous for employers but they are too dumb to listen. Companies in the area allow these types of benefits, so Micros fails to get good employees. Employees work extremely hard but do not get raises or bonuses. They hire the lowest caliber employee because they offer the lowest salary. Also they do not pay well enough to retain their best and smartest employees. It's a revolving door, and knowledge is constantly leaving the company because there is no internal intranet or process for retaining knowledge. No internal processes or documentation to help new or existing employees. Apparently the CEO does not value documentation, and I have heard this many times. I have worked at Micros three years and I am one of the most senior people here. That is an awful culture if there ever was one. Developers who have been around for 6 months are making decisions that are made by seasoned product management teams at other companies. Employees who work here for three months get to train new hires, so no one knows anything. The blind leads the blind.
