Avoid at all cost

Pros

There is none to be said here as a Pro.

Cons

Turnover is extremely high. it’s a revolving door , 2 get in and 5 get out. There are partners that scream at their staff in front of everyone in the office. Male Partners having relationships with female Managers. HR only advocates for Partners. There is no work life balance. You are just a number there. QC does what Partners tells them to do. Avoid this place at all costs.

We are disappointed to see such a negative review from a former associate as Marcum generally has an excellent relationship with many of our former associates through our growing alumni network. Marcum works hard to maintain professionalism in all of our offices, at all associate levels. HR meets regularly with the firm’s associate formed Focus Groups to implement best practices as it pertains to employee engagement and interests. We have made significant efforts to support our associates in maintaining a balanced approach to a career with our Firm. This approach has included the creation of many different types of alternative work arrangements, creating flexibility in working hours through our Core Hours Program and encouraging associates to work remotely when practical. With these initiatives in place, we find our turnover to be lower than industry norms. Marcum values the quality of our work product and our reputation within the professional community at the highest levels. Further, our Quality Control Group has a direct line of communication to our Firm’s Chairman. As clarification, the Quality Control Group does not report to the engagement partners at all. We will continue moving forward in creating a positive work environment for our associates.

Bully Culture

Pros

Around the same comp/benefits as other firms.

Cons

Extremely toxic and dysfunctional. All the components that create a bad culture are here: bullies, political environment, favoritism, constant mergers without a good way of integrating the acquired personnel, hoarding of billable work, unrealistic budgets, undermining and backstabbing each other, pressure to charge more but no real incentives provided, hiring staff for busy season and then firing them after April 15, managers without managerial skills who enjoy ripping people to shreds, many who know very little but still extremely arrogant...too many things to list but it is not a good place unless you are a bully who enjoys the sport of demoralizing and demeaning everyone.

Pros

Working in their SEC audit group, you get good experience on PCAOB audits on fairly diverse clients in terms of industry. You get to travel around the country which can be good.

Cons

They staff to barely meet their needs, then reduce that number so everyone is stretched across their jobs. Busy season you may have 140 hours assigned for some weeks. Their clients are pretty much bottom of the barrel SEC clients, some with completely atrocious accounting functions which makes your job much more difficult. These clients are also passed between the non-Big 4 firms based on the fees charged so be ready to get a "new" client who was a former client, but now the budget is much lower. Since the clients are trash, the budgets are extremely low so realization is never hit. Honestly I would just not bother caring about realization if a partner brings it up because you have to work the hours you need to to do the work properly. MOST IMPORTANT, do not feel any obligation to work harder for them. You are a replaceable cog to them and they will fire you at the moment you are not useful to them. I made the mistake of working insane hours one busy season so I was burnt out after it. My bonus was the same as the prior busy season. There was no other acknowledgement that I worked many more hours than others on my level. Then when I wanted to take time off, I was canned since I would miss a 10-Q deadline period.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Each and every one of our associates is important to us and we are disappointed to hear you feel the time you put in was not valued. We value all of the Firm’s clients and we have strict client acceptance and retention guidelines to ensure the quality of our clients. The past year was the busiest on record for the Firm’s SEC practice, and we hired to accommodate the workload, increasing the group over 30% to address the staffing concerns that you cited. We also strongly encourage our associates to take time off after our traditional busy season deadlines.
