Pros

Benefits, culture, very supportive co-workers, unlimited PTO, unlimited sick days

Cons

Neon went through a large acquisition and as most acquisitions go, new leadership came in and destroyed the company and culture. There are a lot of reviews referencing the "old Neon," which valued their employees, the positive culture, and their clients. Under new leadership, Neon is only about numbers. They push a "mission-driven" culture, but their only goal is to take as much money as they can from these non-profits, even during a pandemic. Favoritism and nepotism have become issues in certain teams, which is very disappointing, considering "the old Neon" used to advocate internal promotions and hiring from within. This is unfortunately no longer the case. There are several people who have been with the company for years and have yet to be promoted. And there some people within the company (who are related to leadership) who got promoted to executive positions within 8 months, with very little qualifications to back it up. I can't imagine how that feels to some who have been with Neon for 5+ years. Leadership is disorganized and only checks in once a quarter with generic updates about numbers and that the company isn't making enough money. It would be helpful to get insights into how these targets are generated because they are highly aggressive. All Neon's clients are non-profit and coming off a year that was very challenging financially. Neon has an incredible support team but the employees are so burnt out because they can't keep up with the workload and Neon refuses to hire more support staff - only sales people. But how are more salespeople going to help when current clients complain constantly that they can't get a response from support before 72 hours?

It's a job

Pros

You will likely work with some of the most talented, hard working, and genuinely kind teammates. They will look out for you. If any one of them contacted me outside of work and needed help, I'd drop everything. Advice to co-workers: with all the drive and idealism at this company, try to treat this job as just a job. Clock in, do what you can, and clock out, for as long as that serves you.

Cons

I've had my share of breaking moments with this company. My fellow reviewers clearly have, and I know many others for whom the number of negative reviews doesn't account for. However I think the truth is this company is little different than any other software company you can find yourself working in. Perhaps one difference is they have the strongest sense of moral licensing that acquiring companies serving non profits can buy. Socially responsible packaging is certainly sexy these days, but it doesn't mean your decisions always 'Make Good Happen'. Communication leaves much to be desired, but they are seemingly always working on it. Money conversations will be hard. It's easy to get caught up and overwork yourself, sometimes because you love your clients, sometimes just to get noticed and considered for promotions/raises. But management is mysterious, and they often don't seem to understand just how much goes into completing your work.

The Good Days are Gone

Pros

- The people on the ground are some of the nicest, hard-working, and intelligent people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. They are what made this job tolerable. - Lots of flexibility with your schedule and the ability to be your own boss. This is department specific since management styles varied greatly and there is no central leadership around how departments are run.

Cons

- As other reviews mention, Neon One was established in 2018 as an umbrella organization of sorts, bringing together different non-profit tech companies. The problem is that the investment firm, Blue Star Innovation Partners, that established Neon One only cares about making money through payment processing fees. Their key focus is establishing NeonPay, which is powered Payrix, a company also conveniently invested in by Blue Star. Once they make their money back (and then some) and force all the customers to use NeonPay permanently, they’ll probably just sell the company. Anything having to do with actual customer service or meaningful product enhancements has fallen completely to the wayside. - You know how companies naturally have good culture, where people like each other and management is decent to employees? Then that gets trampled when management realizes they can use the “culture” as a marketing ploy to hire new employees and then completely stops caring about their actual employees? Yeah, that’s exactly what happened here. The word “Culture” is used so much that it holds absolutely no meaning now and everyone is miserable. - Expect a lot of lip service about potential opportunities for career growth and salary increases with absolutely no follow through. Managers have no power to make any meaningful changes. Upper management doesn’t care at all about actual employee satisfaction or retention. - Expect a lot of pointless meetings where gaslighting is a central theme. Somehow, everything is simultaneously wonderful and the numbers are always “up and to the right”, but also terrible and should be much better. All meetings end with the ominous tone of “work harder or else….” Nevermind the fact that their financial projections were aspirational at best. You’re not crazy. It’s management, not you. The pandemic is the best thing that could have happened to them in terms of employee retention. There’s a permanent wistfulness in the office for the “good old days” that will never return.

Thank you for your honest feedback. We are sorry you had a negative experience. Our priority is our employees- we do quarterly surveys to take feedback on our culture and put in constant and sincere effort to listen to the feedback and make improvements. Speaking specifically to your feedback above: Quality of customer service is constantly monitored - we have resourced the client facing teams heavily in the last 2 years with this sole purpose. Similarly, product team have a roadmap for new products and enhancements. Culture is still definitely a priority- the management has put in significant effort in encouraging work-life balance, increasing internal communication and supporting employees through the hard year. Since your review, our managers have worked on career tracks for the entire company. Managers are instrumental to any salary decisions being made about their teams. Gaslighting is not our practice and is never tolerated at Neon One. We are sorry you felt this and hope you reached out for support internally during your time at Neon One.
