Pros

Corporate discount Location to mass transit and mass transit benefits

Cons

-Long hours -Lack of communication, and cooperation among teams, managers -Extremely high turnover rate +60% -Not using resources effectively, with effective software development processes the resource usages could be less than half what it is now! -Promotions were handed out without merit -Misunderstanding of management of the software development life-cycle and best practices -Lack of camaraderie, this was a big one for me no morale events no team spirit or team building -Not a tech company its a retail company, they moved from a beautiful building to such a boring building with no amenities.. -Not enough emphasis and importance on security. There is lots of training lots of security posters with fear of being the next "Target" but no processes in place, its just a matter of time.

Pros

You'll make a lot of great friends and you can work from home during certain shifts if you qualify. The office is a pretty neat space.

Cons

You must work at your desk and will be penalized if you work at an open table or with others (seriously, you can move from your desk to pee and go on break but that's it). The pay for the amount of headache that you have to deal with is totally not worth it. No one likes the management team. There's an "us vs them" mentality between management and employees, and if you speak up you will be punished. They will tell you "this is an open environment and we don't want you to suffer in silence" but if you step on the wrong toe, you're put in probation. Which, by the way, is called a "Performance Improvement Plan" but in no way will management actually help you and improve. In fact, this just gives management more ammo to keep their eyes on you and get you in trouble again for anything that might seem like a good reason (such as sitting away from your desk, working on your personal computer from home, or being late to a shift that changed overnight). Oh yeah, did I mention schedule is awful and your shift might change from when you fall asleep to when you wake up? Management fails to see that's the scheduling teams fault and not ours. But they will use that to get you out the door anyways. Basically, show up to your desk, sit down, work 8 hours, get up, leave, sleep, and do it again. Obey the rules to the tee and you'll get 30k a year.

Pros

Once it was a great tech team with strong innovative thinkers. Now a weak outgoing CIO and the past Amazon reject CTO has laid waste in a scorched earth policy to fire as many people that disagreed with the direction they were headed.

Cons

Great innovative thinkers led teams throughout the company, but those that looked at the old CTO the wrong way and disagreed with the illadvised choices he was making were quickly terminated (at great expense to Nordstrom). Now the newly replaced VPs and directors that are extremely weak, have no ideas of their own and look to the remaining engineering force that hasn't already been poached by companies outside for any bright ideas. Many engineers inside have approached me and others about positions but many wouldn't cut it outside of nordys.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience here. Innovation is a key pillar of the Nordstrom business model, both in terms of our engineers and leadership. To make this model a reality, we encourage teams to collaborate, however I can understand your frustration in terms of execution. As a company, we are fortunate to have attracted some of the best talent in the industry, but it is the management of our many diverse skill sets that determines our future. With that in mind, I want to apologize if we fell short during your time with us. I encourage you to reach out to me directly at NordTechFeedback@nordstrom.com if you have the time to share any additional feedback, and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Patrick Welch VP Technology Nordstrom
