Pros
Great people - very friendly & welcoming Long tenured employees - some who’ve been with the company over 30+ years Great location - super convenient location and commute from my home Open door policy - senior leaders are open to walk-ins and impromptu meetings Good time off policy - 27 combined paid vacation, personal & sick days with the option to purchase 3 additional pto days
Cons
Stale insurance company set in its old school mentality Long tenured employees are great in many instances but the downside to having long tenured employees is their lack of understanding of how modern day operations work in corporate America. They only know and understand PMA’s structure. Terrible benefits - medical benefits are extremely expensive at $150 per paycheck. This is ridiculous especially for an insurance company. New managers who can come in & turn a department upside down, disrespecting employees, showing no regard for company policies & changing job descriptions without a care for their employees’ general interests. A new manager started at PMA and completely ruined a department by showing 0 respect for her team’s experience & not allowing herself to learn the company culture & structure. This leader is by far the worst micro manager I’ve ever experienced and here are the facts: She was hired to be 100% remote and when she met her team instantly decided that members on her team who were remote 1 day a week could no longer have that privilege (complete hypocrite, right?) Called employees on her team just to see what they’re doing and if they’re working Extremely disrespectful in many ways: 1. Answers personal calls during one on one meetings and has lengthy conversations, 2. Undoes and/or cancels any work her team members do and redoes it her way (shows no trust in her team’s ability to do their job), 3. Shows up very late to any or all meetings with no explanation (0 respect for people’s time- shows how she doesn’t value her team), 4. Talks bad about company employees including leadership and/or colleagues, company employee engagement activities and her feelings about the company by saying “I don’t know why I took this job” and “the company picnic is stupid”, 5. Completely cancels projects after approving them causing issues with both internal and external business partners (shows complete disrespect for the work that has been completed up to that point and how it impacts business partners & relationships) 6. Very rarely responded to e-mails and voicemails but everything she needed was “urgent”, 7. Treated employees like children and not exempt employees who know how to conduct themselves professionally (creating a calendar for time off approvals and requesting access to see everyone’s calendars, also asking to be copied on all e-mails and meetings) The worst part about all of this is the fact that her superiors failed to address these issues but instead swept them under the rug & ignored the issues completely. That taught me a lot about the company and its leadership. If things don’t change, this leader will run this department into a hole & drive her entire team away. This by far was the WORST micro management experience in my career and I’ve been working in corporate America for over 15 years for some very large, profitable corporations. HR doesn’t care about complaints either. You, the employee will look bad if you report an issue so don’t even bother! That’s a complete disgrace not to mention that HR consists of probably 10 people. If this terrible micro manager stays, the company will go downhill fast! I guarantee it.
