Pros

discounts are wonderful hours aren't all that bad, unless you have to work open to close mostly a good working environment

Cons

Okay, the lunch breaks, or lack there of, when they say 'on duty' break it means you have to be on the floor and working with customers, if there is a single person in your store all day long, you don't eat, instead you get paid for that half hour lunch break. It's awful, especially if you work alone for six, seven hours at a time. The demands placed on employees is ridiculous, management expects their part-timers to be two people at once. The focus on selling and numbers, CSAT, DPTs, UPTs, Conversion, its insane. There's always the threat looming overhead that you will lose your job if you don't get the numbers they want, while you maintain the store to their required level, get shipments cleaned, tagged and out, take care of paper work, wait on each customer individually, and generally run yourself ragged trying to be two or three people at once and in two or three places at once.

Pros

When I first started with Payless two years ago, I loved it. I had a great manager with a competent staff, and it never felt like "work" to me.

Cons

In a year and a half, a worked my way from part-time employee to store manager. While I have not been with the company that long, I have my degree and I know my stuff when it comes to my job. However, my salary is very poor, and my social life is non-existant. There have been nights when I stayed until 1:30 AM to get out all my shipment, mornings I came in at 4am to prepare for audits, and weeks I've worked over 60 hours. I had the most wonderful DM who was so helpful, but she was forced to quit once our new DRO started harassing her and telling her she as essentially a failure. Every day there's something new to stress about: a random audit, a double shift, and unannounced visit where you're torn a new one. No store is perfect, even when we try to by. Too many of the people in upper management have never ran a store; they don't realize that perfect service and running 70 cases of shipment our before Friday close and perfecting your training and paperwork is impossible with the payroll they've given us. Nothing is ever good enough for upper management. My entire staff is comprised of new people, save my assistant manager who will not work and HR will not let me fire. There aren't enough hours in a day to do everything they ask of us. They don't even CARE about the service or making the customer happy - they only REALLY care about making money. No improvement is ever good enough. It's an impossible company to succeed in.

Pros

At my store, we are all very close and work flows well for all of us. It is a relatively easy job to do assuming you don't mind customer service or organization. It is all about the customer and keeping product represented and tidy. I really enjoy the environment at my store, but I believe every store operates according to it's management.

Cons

The downside is the pay. I have been working there for a year and a half and have received one $0.25 raise. I am due for one in a month but was told it may only be $0.15. It's not enough. I work about 25-30 hours a week because I am a college student and the wages are too low for my bills. My advice is to get hired at a higher wage, since raises don't seem to cut it. But....it is very easy to advance. They are all about promoting within. So if you work hard and can take on the responsibility, you may get a raise by just moving up. For me, that is not an option. But it worked for my coworker who became Assistant Mngr in a year and 4 months! Tuition reimbursement too!!
