Dysfunctional IT Leadership

Pros

Free parking. Good retirement options.

Cons

Health insurance coverage is bad compared to other large employers. They have cafeterias with some good options but it's not cheap. Nothing is free, including the coffee. IT management doesn't seem to know what they are doing. Basic requests take months and they don't have a service catalog. There is a lot of talk of change but when it's time do the hard work people make excuses and blame others. I have been with the company about 2 years and while some things have improved, it has been marginal. Expectations are not made clear, instead they ask for something that takes weeks to put together and they simply say "That is not what I want, do something else".

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Premera's IT teams are undergoing a significant transformation as we drive to bring additional technology into healthcare. While we’ve made some great progress in updating our systems, we know this type of change takes time and there is still room to improve.

Older workers run!

Pros

Good benefits and nice commute.

Cons

Discrimination is rampant. Unfair hiring practices against women, older workers and Americans. They got rid of just about all the older workers and outsource many of their positions to contactors. Many bullies in management. It's not what you know but who you know and you better be liked. Everyone is now going to be judged by their personalities. They don't care about your knowledge or skills, only where you fall on whatever tool they are currently using to "figure" you out... and then make you feel like crap for being who you are forcing you to change into someone other than who they hired.

Culture shift ongoing

Pros

Most of the people I worked with early in my 7+ years there were great. We worked together through implementation of the ACA and everyone had the member's best interest in mind. There was a decent work/life balance

Cons

Over the last few years, the culture is shifting and to be more demanding and less cordial. There are more politics and power struggles than is healthy and they don't value the rank-and-file employees much.

We are happy to hear that you experienced Premera's great employees and customer centric culture. While Premera is changing how we approach solving customer problems in a rapidly evolving industry, it is challenging to hear you saw that change show up in the form of a less cordial environment. This is certainly not the experience we would want any employee to have at Premera. As an organization we have recently implemented new competencies. One of the desired outcomes is a common language and expectation we can use moving forward to work together and do meaningful work. Culture shifts do take time, but we are grateful to have an amazing group of passionate customer advocates to see us through.
