Selective Insurance reviews about "pay"

Hired from another insurance company with promises of being able to bring new ideas and processes to the table. However, on day 1 was told to leave those things at the door. Never fully accepted as one of the team and still considered "Not Selective" after four years. Work/Life balance was touted by upper management, but direct supervisor was opposed to any level flexibility. Hours are 8 - 4, but leaving at 4 branded you a slacker or not busy enough. Work from home days were actively discouraged at all levels of management. Average work week was 60+ hours, with no recognition or appreciation of that time. HR was a joke, protecting the "lifers" and helping promote a hostile work environment. Salary and bonuses were significantly less than competitor pay packages.

No work life balance, claims upper management is not concerned with the reasons there has been a high turnover in experienced adjuster's in the past 1.5 years. Survey have been given as management is aware of the concerns by the claims adjuster but refuse to make any changes which have been suggested. You work out of your home and are expected to easily work 50-60 hours.

If work - life balance is important, it is not a good place to work. Work volume is unreasonable and unmanageable due to inferior and antiquated technology and poor work flow processes. The technical staff is burdened with excessive nonsensical clerical duties. Remote reporting is available but not flexible.

Lower than average pay for industry. Understaffed. With proper staffing this position would be much better. Also new talent so more experience will help in this heavily team focused environment.

Work load is to large for small staff, causing priorities to be change daily and long hours. Application development done offshore is not reviewed by Selective IT employees. QA is also done offshore, so only acceptance testing is done by Selective employees which often is too late to be fixed before code goes into production. Top heavy with management that are out of touch with application developers. Newly hired managers are unqualified and don't bring much needed outside perspective. There is very little job growth, and training is rarely approved. IT application development staff has decreased even though number of managers has increased.

Systems are ancient. Very political environment. Success is largely based on which clique you join instead of actual accomplishments. Majority of officer hiring is from the outside instead of within. Very frustrating and demoralizing.

You are definitely working for a stock carrier & one that would have to be one of the more arrogant in the industry. High turnover in management. It is your classic east coast carrier that operates in a vacuum. Outrageous expectations of the field personnel & no differentiation between states. Underwriting mgmt always looking over your shoulder & auditing files. Classic beat down job that makes employees feel trapped based on great pay/unrealistic expectations & even worse work environment.
