Growing Too Quickly/ Top Heavy/ Minimal Growth Opportunity

Pros

Parking is provided. Management and below interface well. Good company to take on a heavy workload that may translate into greater skills to use at later positions elsewhere. Reasonable for a job seeker close to retirement.

Cons

Company was recently bought in the last few years and is trying to grow quickly. From an outward appearance, the company has expanded locations and improved their facilities to accommodate new work, but concern is not for the employee. Manpower and training tools are limited, with high performance expectations. Office equipment and furniture dates from 90’s making the working conditions uncomfortable, medical unsound and the work load difficult to get ahead of. The company is not flexible or generous with modern perks such as telecommuting, team building efforts, competitive 401k, or processes and procedures. A lot of manual paperwork procedures with minimal digital updates. Employees tend to stay in positions for the majority of their career causing little openness to diversity on all levels and opportunity for growth specifically for the younger generation (20’s-30’s). Not a lot of team playing, as the culture is to not help and work as a team, but rather find opportunities to boost self at the expense of others. Would consider this company to be “cut throat” in team dynamics. Cross promotion into other positions or other departments is encouraged, but not acted upon. The organization and communication between departments are limited. With the company being bought by an investment firm the objective tone of the company is apparent. Minimal support from leadership new hires in implementing new processes across the company due to lack of communication and information. There is a lack of transparency with leadership in fear that one department will have the same common knowledge as the other causing the threat of one department not having the advantage over others with knowledge. A lack of desire to “share the knowledge” is present. Bonuses and raises are rare. Promotion appears to be based of tenure; demotion is common. Be sure to do your research on compensation and have a full outline of job requirements as the positions tend to underpay. Lastly, the awards the company receives for work culture appear to be primarily due to efforts from the previous owners and staff. The survey is sent out, but leadership can review your remarks and ratings if too many are low, identifying origin of responses and thus causing employees to not be as transparent.

Pros

Work is occasionally interesting/stimulating. Depends on contract availability. 10 holidays. Friendly work environment.

Cons

Benefits not competitive. 8.5 hour work day. Management out of touch with employees. No real sick leave. Non-existent corporate communications. Work environment varies hugely depending on group/division you are assigned to. Retired senior military in most leadership positions are not up to the task of managing civilians. Company is hemorrhaging smart young workers.

Dated company refuses to innovate and milks junior employees

Pros

Access to a variety of different projects, each of which are challenging in their own right. Good benefits.

Cons

No sick leave. Okay PTO, except for senior personnel who get an absurd amount. Use their own proprietary scripting language that will in no ways benefit you in any other company. Advancement seems to be tied to duration of employment rather than performance. Exceptional performance is verbally praise but so is standard performance, so it's all rather droll. Limited bonus opportunity. They hand one out to every employee early on to tantalize them, but don't expect anything after that. If you do get a bonus it'll be given to the team and you'll only see a fraction of it. Dated practices and operations. Spent years modernizing data ingestion, but personnel at all levels pushed back throughout, even after marked improvements. There seems to be no idea how to modernize, no interest in it, and no support for it even after its been demonstrated. Recent benefit revisit saw a generous increase of senior level PTO with no improvement to junior personnel. Mergers and change in management over the past years have resulted in rapid growth, but management is constantly struggling to keep up. There’s a serious lack of mid-level personnel, as most young professionals don’t stick around that long. The diversity is entirely lip service; excepting security 90% of staff are white straight men.
