The Toxicity Is Real

Pros

Walked away with a good friend or two, had some decent health insurance. Perfect for anyone who wants to tune out reality and forget there's a world outside of work. Cushy benefits to make up for the parts of yourself that you will lose.

Cons

It pains me to see that this company has been able to decorate itself as a diverse workplace and inclusive culture AND has landed awards for what's merely on paper. Then again, what do you expect from a tech place owned by IKEA? If you haven't watched the IKEA documentary, you should - and if my review is taken down (as others have been before) Glassdoor should be reminded that facts are not slanderous. Their attempts to be inclusive are patronizing to persons of color and to anyone within the LGBTQ community. And their psychological mistreatment of their wage employees was painful to watch. There were a lot of meetings that consisted of carefully crafted corporate propaganda to remind everyone that the work we were doing was life-changing for the people who use the app. Once I was gone, it took me months to realize I left a tech cult ran by privileged people who would never be able to relate to their actual users.

Good company, bad management

Pros

- Some interesting projects and freedom to manage your work the way you want and suggest new ideas - Very generous pay and benefits (but it is hard to get promoted) - Work/life balance, depending on your team - Some great, caring and talented people - Company seems to truly care about Taskers

Cons

- Unclear strategy/lack of structure and a very "start up" organization style and mentality, despite the fact it is not one anymore. Some teams overlap and communication is not always the best. - Management style. The company is very political/hierarchical and boot licking seems to be the only way to get a little recognition. Employees just toot their own horn and often end up showcasing their work in a forced, unnatural way, just to be be recognized and be in the directors' good books. This leads to a strange atmosphere and makes the company way more political than it should be, considering its size and the values it claims to embody. Certain directors can be quite agressive and lack empathy, especially in London. It often leads to a toxic environment and favouritism, meaning that, if a director has decided they don't like you, your hard work will go unnoticed and you will receive demeaning remarks on a regular basis, sometimes in front of others. Micromagement can also be an issue. - Very high turnover, and a tendency to say "Oh well, that's normal", when clearly something is going on. The company does not seem to care about retention for some reason. - Product itself could be better, but lack of resources/engineers prevents major improvements

Pros

Comfortable wages, benefits, and a yearly bonus. Some opportunity for overtime and double pay if holidays are worked. Amazing health care, dental, and mental health care. Retirement is matched up to 6% which is very competitive.

Cons

Lack of growth and micromanagement. There's a lot of discussion about growth but very little follow-through. To advance, there are some high hoops you need to jump through and many employees feel extremely discouraged. Managers appear to juggle a lot, leaving little room for constructive and actionable feedback. A strong sense of being mistrusted and excessively monitored leading to many peers not wanting to speak up for fear of retribution and potentially being placed on a "warning". Generally, there's an overall sense of not being heard or taken seriously despite constant company-wide meetings that center around employee pulse and engagement. Again, lack of follow-through and commitment.

Toxic leadership, total career trap

Pros

Good benefits For the most part great co-workers Diverse workplace

Cons

No up-level reviews and this is desperately needed. Incredibly hypocrisy. For a company that prides itself on values such as "Caring Deeply" and "Being a Better Neighbor" as well as offering leadership development workshops in an effort to cultivate a productive work environment where people operate with integrity (i.e., not jumping to conclusions and "left-hand column" tactics), leadership tolerates openly destructive and aggressive behavior on behalf of exec. Since the acquisition, the push for "growth" in tandem with the IKEA partnership has resulted in major turnover: execs, directors and senior engineers have left as well as more junior staff who've worked with the company for years. Some rumored and very plausible reasons for departure have included new policies surrounding deadlines (without regard for the feasibility of these deadlines), a thick sense of hierarchy, getting physically sick because of the stress, and destructive / resource-draining finger-pointing. Not only does it cost a minimum of $50K to replace some of these hires, but the folks who left abruptly or who were terminated (which has its own costs) in the name of "growth" have not been adequately replaced, and the missing resources have resulted in profound disorganization. Frankly, many of those who remain under bad leadership are too afraid to communicate their needs to their boss to work effectively which has led to cascading disorganization on other teams (e.g., bad managers don't help their team prioritize and structure requests to technical team members and then those members are put in front of a firing squad). The bottom line experience for anyone expected to work on growth (which appears to be the entire company regardless of how futile and impotent this effort is) is that your gonna be caught in a totally pointless political battle where you learn nothing and are on the spot for any failures that can plausibly be offloaded to you. You'll also probably be fired because that's seems to be the default. Outside of being suddenly let-go, there are ALSO an inexcusable number of people on PIPs across the company (in some cases a department majority). At best, this speaks to terrible management, at worst it leaves the impression that the company is plagued by financial problems that they're not being upfront about and are choosing to manage people out instead. Either way, there is no excuse for not vetting the bad reviews and for creating a totally toxic work environment. And to echo what the other poster wrote, there is no clear path to advancement (put another way, you can get a bad review for totally arbitrary reasons). Most people are radically under-utilized, performing a massive amount of tedious tasks and getting blamed if anything falls through the cracks. I've watched people lose skills and become less competitive just by being here which make the place feel like an authoritarian career trap. If this is the future of work: run.

Turning Around

Pros

- Great health benefits and 401k match - Culture of caring deeply and collaboration - Constant and consistent transparent communication - New leadership with the right approach and vision - Growing teams and investing in technology and tools

Cons

They are moving through so much change it's challenging to keep up. It is the right change and much needed change but a lot happening all at once. TaskRabbit is finally hitting and exceeding their targets... great for everyone and exciting... but also tiring. Teams are re organizing and re structuring, new faces coming on board in really high numbers. The previous under investment in teams and technology, before new leadership came on, ended up meaning high turnover... but I think we are coming out of that now.

Pros

TaskRabbit has been growing since I started working here over 2 years ago and it doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon. I love the constant expansion, the people and benefits. I love the platform we support as it helps a variety of people who don't do the 9-5, as well as help people get things done!

Cons

With growth comes growing pains. Which isn't for everyone.

Great culture

Recommend
CEO approval
Business Outlook

Pros

Far and away the best part of TaskRabbit is the culture. People are smart, friendly, and authentically want to do the right thing. Work-life balance is great. Management is generally supportive and understanding. Strong emphasis on personal development. It's also a well-known brand in tech. You get the benefit of working for a smaller company, that still has a strong reputation.

Cons

TaskRabbit got acquired by IKEA, so there's no equity. All comp and bonuses are in cash. The company changes direction frequently, and hasn't managed to capture a cohesive slice of the gig economy.
