Lot of heart, little reward

Pros

-Many wonderful, dedicated staff -Diverse and supportive colleagues and network of organizations -Flexible work-life balance, depending on your role and direct manager -Good benefits and competative pay for a nonprofit

Cons

-Unclear vision with many money/resource-sucking projects that take years to produce much of anything of value. By the time it does, it's already obsolete. -Slow-moving environment in many ways, yet still chalk-full of "small fires" that need to be urgently put out. -Mass exoduses of key talented staff seem to happen every 6-8 months, leaving teams in chaos, projects abandoned, and mediocre middle-managers behind. -Worker bees are the heart of the organization yet left out of decisionmaking and recognition for their work. High turnover at nearly all levels. -Ineffective HR, leading to many grievances left unheard, requests for improvements ignored, and promotions taking eons to approve. -Unclear or non-existent career development within the organization.

Our ability to attract and retain employees has set enviable standards inside and outside of our industry as evidenced by the long tenure of our employee base. Nevertheless, feedback is crucial to TechSoup’s continuous improvement cycle and has been shared with the employee engagement team for review and action-planning.

Good mission, interesting people, poorly managed

Pros

Really makes a difference in getting tech in the hands of non-profits at a fraction of the retail price. Many interesting and smart people.

Cons

Management is in denial and out of touch with what is going on in their organization. Lack of strategic thinking, lots of turf wars over petty things, and understandably unhappy employees. Management is very top heavy ad does not seem to get promoted on merit vs. longevity, the result is a pretty dysfunctional organization with lots of roadblocks that tie the hands of people who are working hard to get results. The organization loses a lot of good people for a variety of reasons and it just doesn't seem to change.

Pros

When it was a bit smaller this was a good place to work. I miss the era when the company appeared to be a real community and seemed to care about even its "lower" employees.

Cons

The priority of growth has taken over the idea of a nonprofit being a community, as in from what they consider to be the lowest to who is considered to be worth more money. Certain departments may be well paid, but the account management department does not pay a living wage. It has a management that is very "efficiency" oriented but not at all caring of retaining quality people who want to stay with a good company. Any warmth and real team spirit is gone.
