Pros

Tremendous environmental causes worthy of protecting

Cons

Viscious employment environment to work in. Back stabbing, no management support. You're on your own.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I feel disheartened to read it as your experience is not how we how we want our employees to feel at TNC. As in most of our reviews, the work with do is ambitious and I understand how easy it is to feel not valued when faced with the growing challenges of saving the world. Additionally, I can't imagine how hard it would be to feel like you work in a vicious environment without supportive colleagues. TNC doesn't want our employees to feel this way and have measures in place to combat that, such as an Ethics & Compliance call line and ERG's to help further relationships outside of your business unit. Again, I apologize for your experience. If you would like to chat further, I'd love to hear your advice on how to move forward. I understand it takes courage to post reviews like this, so appreciate you doing so. Please contact me at recruiting@tnc.org to discuss further.

Pros

Great mission, history of working with all to achieve conservation outcomes. Good benefits, good pay in my department. Growth possible but expect it to be slow. Global reach. Some recent efforts to modernize viewpoints and workforce. People for the most part are best aspect of TNC. Some are also worst part. See the cons. I rated TNC as a place I'd recommend to a friend but that is weighted based on past experience and knowing there are places and programs that are still good places to work.

Cons

Ever widening gap between leadership and the rank and file. Good ol' boy culture of years past is now full-fledged superiority. Some top and senior-level leadership that definitely do not exhibit TNC's values. Lack of accountability that is applied equally. 10 years ago TNC was a much more enjoyable place to work where you could expect to be treated as an equal by most and have some reasonable growth potential if you were willing to be flexible and took ownership for delivering excellent work. Those in senior positions had some sense of humility. Not anymore.

Pros

My work is a lot of fun - sometimes I can't believe they pay me to do it. A lot of good dedicated people to work with. In my case, flexible schedule

Cons

As others have said, avenues for professional development/advancement depend entirely on your manager. Science is the most fun job, but has the least potential for advancement. Ph.D.s are valued and compensated greater than those with greater experience. One of the biggest negatives for employees is that, as you get more years with TNC, you are more likely to get laid off. As the economy cycles, so does TNC, so periodic big layoffs are endemic. In my chapter (state), layoffs are entirely arbitrary. The first to go are those with greater seniority because of their higher salary - I have seen many great workers, with more than 15 years, get laid off - the de facto result is that TNC discriminates against older workers, TNC's mission has changed drastically in the past few years. Where we once were about saving "the last of the best and the best of the rest", we are now about protecting those areas that resonate most with people, rather than those areas with the greatest conservation value.
