Toxic culture fueled by chaotic leadership and no strategy

Pros

There are talented people motivated to do good in the world.

Cons

Over the last few years systemic discrimination of women has gone from probable to undeniable and really hard to watch. Almost all of the women who were part of the senior leadership team have left, burnt out, or been pushed out in the past year. No men have left. The worst part is hearing the CEO make inappropriate jokes about it in an attempt to be…relatable? No action is taken, no change happens. I’ve watched senior women get spoken to in ways that are passive aggressive, condescending and dismissive. It seems like the higher up you go, the more toxic the culture becomes with emotional manipulation used as a way to control and influence employees. HR is lead by someone very new to the profession and very loyal to the founders… not a great combination. Overall there’s a weird culty vibe at this place where the CEO avoids any accountability, deflects blame and routinely cries at company meetings in effort to rally the team. There is a lot of crying but real issues behind the company’s struggles are never addressed, quarterly targets are always missed and employees are asked to just stay positive despite so many red flags. The strategy is constantly changing with customer-facing teams bearing the burden of picking up the pieces. If you’re considering working here, think long and hard. Some roles are more insulated from the dysfunction and could be ok, but this place is smoke and mirrors and many of us are actively interviewing and looking for new jobs.

Thanks for your feedback. You indicate you're a current employee and I encourage you to bring your concerns to your team lead or anyone in our management group including me so that we can have a proper discussion of them. For the interest of all the others reading this, here are some brief thoughts: 1. We are a nimble startup and in fact pride our selves on constant change from occasional grand pivots to continual small improvements. This can be challenging for some. 2. We’ve just re-implemented our product architecture, we keep hardware up to date for everyone and otherwise we use all the usual tools relevant for a geographically distributed startup. So I’m not sure what this refers to. 3. Overall we lean to hiring based on cpu (potential and capability) rather than database (specific current skills) factoring in team fit. For those who lean to hiring based on database I suppose this seems like we hire based on personality rather than hard technical skills when in fact we are hiring for potential rather than short term payback. We manage our company for long term shareholder value and there are many who don’t take this approach. - Jim Firstbrook, Co-founder and President

Pros

- High level of trust for employees - Remote first work culture and know how to do it well - Have gone out of their way to figure out how to make sure employees are truly supported to do their best work - especially during covid. - Addressing issues of being a growing company head on - not perfect but working on it. - Still lots of potential for growth and individual contributors can have a real impact.

Cons

- still got a lot to figure out re value of product and exec leadership can take a sharp turn on ideas quickly. - not great at letting people run with their own ideas without inserting a lot of people and their feelings into the middle of it - need to do more work on pay equity - some positions now very underpaid relative to the sales salaries in the company. This needs to be addressed ASAP or a lot of people will leave.
