Pros

Health benefits and retirement plan are good.

Cons

In my thirty years as a professional, I have never worked in such a toxic work environment. The red flags were apparent just two months after I started, but I decided to keep going and give this place a chance. However, after one year, I decided I couldn't take it any longer as it was seriously affecting my physical and mental well-being. Leadership as a whole was severely lacking - zero people skills, micromanaging, etc. It's obvious UTHealth doesn't require their managers to have any training or education prior to placing them in these positions (just scroll through the reviews - most people leave due to bad managers). There are no checks and balances within the department, so it's easy to feel completely helpless when your direct manager is the cause of the issues. There is no standardized training or cross training, something I found very odd for a company of this size. Calling or reporting complaints to HR does absolutely nothing. Team members are underappreciated and not fully utilized to their full potential - it was a sad sight to see. Morale was so incredibly low for all employees within the department. Oh, parking is EXTREMELY expensive ($200 a month)! If I'd known this before I was hired, I would have tried to negotiate a higher salary.

Pros

World renowned medical institution with behind the times administrative training and leadership. Diversity is a pro and why I came here in the first place but the UT System is controlled by politics so hard to escape that aspect. People from everywhere across the globe and all walks of life work here. It truly was a privilege to learn and grow with so many different people.

Cons

Culture needs changing and better training. The intranet is beyond out of date. Internal search engine is chaotic and uninformative. The second most endowed university not investing in critical technology/software that is used everyday by employees is mind boggling. Whoever negotiated the 2023 BCBSTX contract should not be negotiating on behalf of UTHealth employees ever again.

Pros

I appreciate the benefits and the hybrid schedule. I would say the pay, but my responsibilities keep growing, causing my hourly pay to decrease over the last two years significantly. How am I rewarded for taking on extra duties? A 2% merit increase.

Cons

Demeaning faculty supervisors; overworked & undervalued staff; lack of department-specific written procedures and training; too much gatekeeping; and a clear lack of communication and any written procedures.
