Pros

There aren't many pros about this job. If you can stick it out one to two years to gain the experience you need to move on to a better paying and more enjoyable job, it will be worth it. You'll be doing a lot of cold calling, phone calling, but this isn't bad experience to have under your belt if you can handle it. There are more desirable companies to work for who will like to see this experience on a resume. You'll find there is autonomy and flexibility in this role.

Cons

It is difficult to sell a service that doesn't run the way you are selling it, especially when there is zero communication between the service and the sales divisions. There isn't much, if any, leadership or strategic guidance for the sales professionals truly looking to development themselves and make a career out of sales. The management is lazy and will avoid taking ownership for any mistakes whenever something goes wrong. There is a ton of meaningless busy work, it will not help advance you in your professional career, nor will it help with the real-world situations you encounter in the field with UniFirst or any other sales position. The compensation is actually less than what you discuss in your offer and they will make it seem like much more.

Thank you for your feedback. We agree with you that Cold Calling and making Phone Calls to Set Appointments is great experience to have for any Sales position. We at UniFirst believe these are two important pieces to the puzzle of success in Sales. A Sales Career also provides a great deal of autonomy and flexibility, which for the right person is very attractive. We understand that in many industries, a disconnect may occur between Sales and Service. This is why we encourage our Salespeople to be the start of change if their Location is struggling with this. It’s unfortunate that you felt you were not given the leadership or guidance that you needed. Developing our Team Leaders to be positive, motivational, and supportive is a top priority and we continue to strive for this through our Team Partner education and training.

Pros

I was promised quick advancement. I was also promised time with my new family and a pay raise. Additionally, I was promised I would be trained and that I could make my own hours.

Cons

I worked 18 hour days. I got zero time with my family. None of my sales orders were ordered correctly, my truck was never loaded. I was reprimanded for taking a day off to spend with my sick son. Legally, I was not supposed to drive the delivery truck without training which I never received. Additionally, I was let go for wanting more family time. Coincidentally, this coincided with the time my 90 day probation period was up and they would have had to offer me health benefits.

Thank you for your feedback. While career advancement cannot happen overnight, it is very achievable at our growing company for individuals who consistently give their best effort and achieve results. We promote from within whenever possible. In fact, the vast majority of our leaders have been with the company for a number of years and have worked their way up to their current positions. Training our Team Partners is very important to us. We utilize a variety of learning methods: by computer, books, video conferencing, in-person, and on-the-job training to prepare our Team Partners to succeed in their current positions and for career advancement. Working at UniFirst allows our Route Sales Representatives to work a Monday through Friday schedule. Our routes are built with efficiency in mind. Each location is required to use road mapping software to position customers in the best possible sequence in order to service our customers and reduce drive time. In the event a route becomes too large to properly manage, a discussion with your manager should take place in order to balance the workload. We offer a competitive benefits package that includes paid vacation and sick time for work/life balance. However, like many companies, no paid sick days can be used until after the completion of the 90-day introductory period.

Thank you for the great review! We are very proud of our Sales Training programs and glad to hear that you feel like you’ve been given the knowledge and tools to help you succeed. We know that any new Sales Career takes hard work and some “long hours” especially in the first year. However, one of the things we find so great about Sales is that the hard work you put in is directly reflected on your pay check, which makes that uncapped commission you mentioned quite the plus. : )
