Pros

I started at dotloop as one of the first 10 employees. Back then, it was a much different place to work...but that's not a good or bad thing. There were things I loved about working here then, and things that I love about working here now. When I started at dotloop, the CTO at the time took me under his wing and taught me everything I needed to know about development in order to succeed here. I literally went from knowing next to nothing, to being able to develop any feature or fix any bug that was asked of me. Dotloop absolutely made me who I am today, and for that I am definitely grateful. As for the company now, it's still an excellent place to work...but you can't expect the same level of personal development that I got. There are still an abundance of learning opportunities to be had here though, given that you put in the passion and effort to take a task and run with it...so don't be put off if you're an inexperienced developer. I think what I like the most about working at dotloop is the level of trust and respect that is given to us. Our team has a great track record in getting things done well and on time, and we are treated accordingly. There are no helicopter-bosses, there's no mandatory clock-in and clock-out time. We are all treated as passionate, intelligent individuals who are all collaborating together to make the dotloop dream come true. The team celebrates victories and learns from their failures together, and it feels like everyone is learning and growing from of one another so we can become better both as a company and as individual developers. From my experience, management will work with you to achieve any goal or area you want to improve in...as long as you're passionate about it and willing to put in the effort. Yes, sometimes that means working late, yes that sometimes means working on the weekend, or spending your free time developing a project to showcase your skills in order to advance...but if you're enjoying it, it's worth your time. In the past the company has struggled with keeping the promises they made, but that has ceased to be an issue in the last 1-2 years. If you want X position, and can spend the time proving that you're capable of delivering what's required of X position...management will take note and work with you on a plan to get you there.

Cons

- There are occasionally times where you'll be working late, or on weekends. They don't happen nearly as often as they used to, as a result of the entire company getting better at estimating, time management, and expectation setting. If you're working late, it's also rarely because a manager asked/forced you to, and more because you're so bought in to the feature you're developing and want to see it succeed. - As mentioned briefly in the Pros section, management has a history of not delivering on promises in the past. The key word here in the past though, as I've seen nothing in the last 1-2 years to suggest that they continue to do this. - The compensation could be higher, but it's by no means bad. Management states that the stock options granted should make up for the market rate differences, but it's always better to not count your chickens before they hatch. - Product direction sometimes dictates the solution rather than the problem. As developers, we love to come up with solutions on our own for solving a certain problem. That's what we are at heart, problem solvers; it's what makes us feel fulfilled after a long day of work. This point has been brought up to management before though, and they've already agreed to keep it in mind and improve. I'm optimistic that this negative will lessen or disappear in the coming months.

WOW. Thank you for this very thoughtful review and for your 5+ years of passionate hard work at dotloop. Your notes are consistent with the feedback that we've heard from Team Innovation previously, so consider us aligned and know that we are working on the items previously discussed - such as "problem solving" vs "solution giving". In full disclosure however, it sounds like we won't be able to keep you from working late and on weekends anytime soon ;). All seriousness, stay passionate and thank you again! Austin

I just discovered the Employer response function on Glassdoor, so pardon my delayed response. It appears that you had a poor experience in our Sales group pre-2014. There is no question that we scaled our sales team too quickly when we first launched it in late 2012. Since then, we've made many changes including the things you mentioned, and are quite pleased with the results. So thanks for your feedback. I hope you have landed in an exciting role/company that you are passionate about! Austin

Pros

Great product and interesting problems to conquer Great people trying to raise the bar

Cons

Bad hiring decisions in higher management Worse culture for a technology company No perks at all after all this hard work Seriously, need to let go of senior managers who have nothing but to harm the company in making poor decisions about hiring, roadmap etc.

I just discovered the Employer response function on Glassdoor, so pardon my delayed response. A lot has changed since 2013, so I'm not sure how applicable some of this feedback is at this point. But I appreciate you sharing it. We strive to hire the most qualified people that we can. We're not perfect, but I'm very proud of our ongoing business momentum and growth, which is a testament to the amazing team of loopers (at all levels) that we have in place. Please ping me directly via email if you still have feedback around how we can improve management. Austin

Pros

Revolutionary product. Good place to be successful if one you're ambitious and adaptable to change. Most of the people are great to work with. Those who are committed care a lot about the future success of the company. The product has a direct impact in bettering people's lives.

Cons

Disconnect from market understanding. Continuous changes to strategy. Not learning from mistakes. Smaller company with little infrastructure in place. Lack of synergy within upper management. Competitors are starting to catch up. Smaller company with limited resources. You have to want it and work outside of business hours to be successful (this isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Pros

Talented, inspired employees that love what they do and the ability to work on a system used by hundreds of thousands of people.

Cons

Senior Management says and makes whatever promises they think they need to make but aren't overly concerned with following through if it doesn't suit there needs. Truly disappointing and whether it was intentional or not it was consistent enough to make me disgusted. Couple that with the fact It's a start up expect long long days. I've known some people to work more than 24 hours straight.

I just discovered the Employer response function on Glassdoor, so pardon my delayed response. Delivering on promises is definitely a value that we take seriously. It can be difficult however, for high growth companies to manage promises in their early days as the growth exceeds the infrastructure to support it. We are no exception to that rule. In 2014, we made a lot of investment internally to put the right people, processes and systems in place to support the rapid growth that we are experiencing as a business. Employee and Customer Satisfaction numbers suggest that something is working. So thanks again for your feedback, and I hope that your continuing to follow your passion in life. Austin

Great internship!

Pros

The dotloop internship is very unique and exciting for multiple reasons. The first is it provides an intern to gain valuable experience in technology start-ups that you could traditionally only get by going to work on the east or west cost. The second is that dotloop is right in the transition period from start-up to large company. This creates an environment that allows you to see how successful start-ups grow and function while also giving you experience in functioning in "corporate culture." The most valuable part of this internship has been the opportunity to work on corporate strategic projects. Just last week myself and the other intern were personally assigned a project to develop the framework for the company's repositioning in the market. We then gave a presentation on our findings to the entire upper-level management team. Every day is different but every day you have the ability to learn something that will stick with you for the rest of your career.

Cons

Currently there is a deficit of people on the marketing team that creates periods of confusion/a lack of direction and proper training to allow us to effectively do our jobs. This requires us to be proactive with our initiatives instead of sitting around and waiting to be told what to do next. This could be a pro or a con depending on what type of person you are.

Thanks for your review. I recall being involved in the positioning project you mentioned - amazing work! I'm glad you highlighted the people deficit in Marketing. This is one challenge that's tough to avoid as an early stage rapidly growing company... in that there's always more work to do than people to do it. So this is a great reminder for us to set clear expectations early in the hiring process with new Loopers. Thanks again! Austin
