Pros

After college I bounced around jobs, looking to get a proverbial foot in the door. Big companies with management trainee programs and tiered systems of seniority, or working 3 mediocre jobs to try to plow out of student loan debt. I was hired on as an entry level copywriter. My first week here I would get out to my car and just yell swearwords. I was drowning. There was/is not much of a system in place for training – I did it wrong and then did it again with a little feedback – the majority of your feedback is “Just get it done” and “are your clients winning?” I sat with 5 people at a conference room table because there was nowhere else to put people. Overheard about 100 sales meetings where the sales team reiterated to the clients that the only measure of success at iNET is return on investment, and that the SEO specialists were evaluated internally based on their ability to deliver ROI. Turnover was high. People would make jokes about the turnover, saying the hunger games cannon should go off every time someone quit. A lot of smart, creative, hardworking people got fed up. The turnover was viewed as Darwinian. The boss is intense. I did see a guy get yelled at for 5 minutes straight – his mission was to tell everyone how iNET should be. After his ideas drew no quarter from the boss, he regularly requested 1-on-1 meetings with everyone to whisper about how awful it was. He was truly miserable here, you could see it in his walk and hear it in his voice. One of his big criticisms was the turnover, said we should conduct exit interviews, have a newsletter, and throw a farewell party for all the departed. The straw that broke the camel’s back was an act of blatant subversion. I have little doubt that he’s happier gone. The boss is intense. Your job is not to convince the guy signing the paychecks that you’re smarter him. It’s to understand his vision and execute it. The people who get that see their freedom and influence rise. That’s not brown-nosing or office politics that’s reality. It’s rewarding creative work. Some book I didn’t read said the four keys to job satisfaction are 1 autonomy, 2 mastery of craft, 3 self-determination and 4 higher purpose. You can get that all here. The work 8 hours and get paid for 8 hours thing is awesome. Access to overtime is a tremendous benefit.

Cons

Direct deposit. That’ll come with time.

Pros

You are legally granted a paycheck, but that is the only difference between iNet and a sweatshop for websites.

Cons

Their "creative genius" brand of websites are texhnologically outdated by 10 years, at least. To incorporate ANY form of creativity, a competent designer would need at least one week of work. We were expected to hammer out websites in half that time, and our customers kept coming back for site repairs because we were forced to give them a uncompleted and often duct-taped website. The working conditions were comparible to a puppy mill. Cramped spaces, limited lighting, low ventilation, filthy stained carpets and no janitorial or building maintenance to be seen or heard. The management style was perfectly satisfactory for The Third Reich, but not acceptable for 21st Century America. I could compare the working relationship between sales and tech to be VERY similar to the high school antics of jocks vs. geeks. The sales force considered themselves to be the unstoppable force and perfect team of juggernauts. But when it came time to explain what they were selling, they had absolutely no clue. In many cases, we were told to provide products or add-ons to our websites that we simply didn't have the technology for. Sales would blow off the logical reasoning "Why are you selling products we do not offer?" with a barking and demeaning "JUST GET IT DONE!" Leadership tactics are fear and intimidation driven. Instead of what can we all do for the company, the mentality was more "What can you do for me, NOW!" Management would resort to personal attacks on employees to instill a shotty order of power. This resulted only in extremely low employee retention. Most employees would only last 6-12 months. Employee morale is simply not a consideration, a giant waste of time. When I finally put in my notice, not only was I ridiculed, but agressively and vindictively riduculed. I had objects thrown at me, and was even spit upon. I was treated as though I had betrayed the "team" by moving my life in a better direction.

Pros

iNET was my first job out of college and I've been here for 5 years now. At first it was somewhat of rude awakening because it's a fast paced environment that doesn't accept mediocrity. iNET strives to be the best, and if you can acquire that attitude your potential is limitless. A positive attitude really goes a long way. I've learned more at iNET in 5 years than I would working at any other marketing firm for 20. Every single day I'm challenged and I'm never watching the clock counting down the minutes until 5pm. The days go quick because your projects are always rotating all while learning along the way. If you treat it like a professional career that you REALLY care about you'll be rewarded continuously and graciously.

Cons

Sometimes it gets stressful, but what job doesn't?! Don't work here if you aren't willing to work hard and grind it out. The turnaround on projects is extremely quick and average cookie cutter skills aren't accepted. Some updated amenities and curb appeal would be very nice, but isn't a deal breaker considering what is to come. I don't really care about cold bathrooms or bad tasting coffee, that's child's play. I care about being able to support my family and enjoy the lifestyle I desire outside of work. iNET and how I chose to approach my opportunities there allow me to do that.
