A 3 million-square-foot mixed-use development was recently unveiled in Iași, Romania. The project, dubbed “Silk District,” is being designed as a modern neighborhood, aimed to attract young people with healthy lifestyles. As such, the complex will feature, among others, office space, student housing, fitness facilities and a hotel. For the Silk District, Epstein is providing master planning, architectural design and MEP engineering services and features a collaboration between our Chicago and Bucharest offices.
Marriott International's 26-story AC Hotel is expected to rise in 90 days in New York's Nomad District. Epstein continues to be a proud member of the team bringing high-rise modular construction to the United States, demonstrated by our technical expertise associated with this project.
Epstein is very proud to begin work with the Village of Beach Park and neighbors on the Northern Lakefront Trail Connectivity Plan. Epstein’s project manager, Tim Gustafson, AICP, grew up nearby and is excited to work with our municipal partners to help improve walking, bicycling, and increase economic development for the region. Our project team includes the Active Transportation Alliance and The Lakota Group to assist us with planning, engagement, and branding.
Construction on the Epstein-designed and engineered Riverview Bridge is progressing. Our FAA licensed pilot, Dave Hilty, PE, recently took the drone to the construction site to check on the current status of the project. Again this year, Epstein was a proud supporter and dedicated counselor for the ACE Mentor Chicago. From this past fall through the spring, a devoted team of Epstein’s architects, engineers and construction professionals met weekly with a group of ACE high school students. Throughout this time, Epstein supported, directed and nurtured these future designers and engineers while they designed a health clinic in East Garfield Park. Check out their final presentation!
Construction on Lincoln Common is nearing completion, a project for which Epstein is serving as the civil engineer. This project involves redeveloping the former Children’s Memorial Hospital site in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood into a massive mixed-use development featuring luxury apartments, low-rise condos, and much more. Read more from our Dave Hilty, PE, about the continued progress:
Construction on the 60-story Wolf Point East residential tower is nearing the half-way point, a project for which Epstein is providing civil engineering services. The development, located along the Chicago River, will have 698 luxury apartments, six levels of below grade parking, 3,900 square feet of street-level retail, and 35,000 square feet of amenities. At 930,000 total square feet, it will be among the largest apartment buildings in the city. Read more from our Dave Hilty, PE, about the continued progress:
The City’s Department of Buildings recently announced that they are making a “comprehensive” overhaul to local building codes, which was last done 70 years ago. The new code, which featured Epstein’s Lori Chandler's, AIA, direct participation and technical expertise, will align more closely with national standards and provide more flexibility for new construction and building renovations. Epstein has long been viewed by the City as one of the local A/E code experts and, furthermore, has been providing code review services to the Department of Buildings since 2014 as part of their Direct Developer Services program.
Our director of industrial process engineering, Darrin McCormies, recently spoke with Food Engineering Magazine about how Epstein incorporated numerous green features into the Seaboard Triumph Foods pork processing plant, a project for which we provided DesignBuild services. From using a more efficient, cost-neutral alternative to a steam boiler for heating water to using condenser blowdown water to clean barns at a meat processing facility, we regularly recommend sustainable solutions, even if they fall outside of mainstream design practices or the formal LEED certification program. Read more from Darrin about what sustainability in plant design means:
"Construction on the new expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is taking shape very quickly. Steel columns, beams, and large diagonal trusses can easily be seen rising above the original building from the street and from across the Hudson River, with multiple yellow construction cranes swinging and lifting the structural components into place." Epstein, as part of a joint-venture with FXCollaborative, is providing planning, programming and preliminary design services for the $1.5 billion expansion. The center will also soon be home to NYC's largest rooftop solar array!
