Pros

Dsw was a fun place to work. It's very forward thinking. It promotes self expression and encourages you to express your own style and basically be inspiration for the customers. I had an amazing team of co workers and my DM was one of the best managers I have ever had. I think everything gets blamed on the next manager in line, but the truth is it's their job to support company initiatives, just like mine was when I led a store. There were many days we could've just been written up in a "get it done or get in trouble " mentality but my DM was there along side us until midnight working to get the product out, even when they didn't have to. Dsw is not afraid of change, constant change.. that can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Cons

We'll get this out of the way, the payroll cuts. Yes, i get it, it's no fun working 60 hours a week being away from your family to make up for the loss of payroll and increase in workload. This is the new normal in retail. It's not dsw, its retail entirely. Go next door to your closest retailer, they will complain about the same problems. But where dsw gets it wrong is they are constantly taking, with no benefit to their leaders to stay. Sometimes it almost felt like we were constantly delivered negative information or changes followed by negative reinforcement.

Pros

Discount. Great co workers. Holiday schedule.

Cons

Where do I start? Unfortunately DSW has progressively gone down hill. With an influx of like minded, similair pedigree upper management that care more about shareholders and there status in the " high school musical". Its no wonder tons of experienced SM's and even DM's are leaving quickly. What a shame. Getting a complaint can lead to good people losing jobs or being mistreated. Its a guilty till proven innocent culture. Its funny as they will dismiss this review as a disgruntled associate with an axe to grund but that could never happen with a customer complaint? My team works hard to provide a great experience but feel deflated after a regional or higher visit. What happened to inspiring and recognizing efforts. Instead its not good enough, do more mentality. I am left to pick up the pieces after the tornado leaves.

A company losing its values

Pros

Holiday hours are much better than other retailers. Easy merchandising. Growth company with no debt. Evolving business model to meet customer needs and industry changes.

Cons

Shrinking payroll with increasing expectations. Ever changing policies, usually without notifying stores. Operational precedures vary greatly by location, causing confusion. High turnover of managers. Poor HR practices at a regional level. Unethical investigations of complaints including lying and deceit. Numerous harassment complaints about my DM from 6 different managers resulted in no action and retaliation. Every company has its problems and there was a time I truly believe in DSW. But the level of disrespect from the VP and unethical HR practices were just too much, I had to leave.
