Pros

Good health benefits, vacation time, decent compensation and great co-workers.

Cons

Express Scripts (ESI) used to be a nice place to work. The company was very employee oriented and we were able to have fun while still getting work accomplished. The morale began sliding dramatically as department management changed due to being over stressed and overworked. Outsourcing became more popular which in turn brought layoffs. The fun employee appreciation activities stopped at a company level and care for employees completely went out the window. Anyone who has worked at ESI for any amount of time (at least in Eligibility) is completely deflated and in fear of losing their job. There is absolutely no work/life balance either. When I left ESI, I was working a minimum of 60 hours every week while being a salary employee (no overtime pay) and absolutely no appreciation for the extra work. Cons: no work/life balance, lack of care for employees (feel like just a number), terrible training (for new & existing employees, lack of job knowledge by management, extremely high stress

No life/work balance

Pros

In my position, I am fairly compensated.

Cons

Work load is unmanageable, which creates a very high stress level. Regularly work 12 plus hours a day. Sadly, even doing so you are still behind. It is really competitive to the point that you never know who you can trust. Hard work does get compensated but also gets you more work with even higher expectation. Their is very little concern for employees well being, which is ironic since we are part of the healthcare system. We should know the importance of work/life balance to have happy and healthy employees. Long hours, high stress, lack of sleep and little personal time can have negative effects on your employees physical and mental health. The PTO should just be referred to as flex time because no one covers your load while you are out so you are still working those hours, just at a different time.

Pros

I have been with Esi (formerly Medco) for 5 years. It is very close to home and very relaxed environment. Wearing jeans to work daily is a definite plus. Since the merger, there has been some improvement in reducing the non clinical work that is given to Rph's. That is a pro in some cases, but is causing lack of quality in others.

Cons

As others have mentioned, customer service is just lip service. The focus on customer service has declined greatly since the merger, and patients complain about it all the time. The quality of service given to our patients is so low, all we can do is remain quiet when the patients are upset, even though we agree with them wholeheartedly. The lack of respect for pharmacists and clinical judgement is laughable. While Medco was a very forward thinking, clinical type of PBM, ESI is only about saving money and making sure it's stock is valuable. Therefore things that Medco figured out a long time ago regarding quality, compliance and customer service are being ignored, and in effect, things are going backward. If we do something wrong, we are expected to somehow let the patient feel it is their fault. I have tried to be optimistic since the merger, but am quickly realizing things are going in the wrong direction. It's very disappointing.
