Abysmal acquisition and destruction of a once-great product

Pros

They let laid-off employees keep their laptops.

Cons

I joined Greenhouse as a member of Interseller, an outbound sourcing tool GH acquired in late 2021. The acquisition was talked up as a boon to our company; added resources would mean more innovation and a cutting-edge product. Instead, they poached our engineers and marketers, built our core product into their suite, and let us rot. Leadership sorely underestimated the competition in the outbound space as they lapped us with texting, automation, and AI features. Not a single meaningful update was made to our product post-acquisition. “Feature parity is not a way to win a category,” we were told. Neither is not trying. Our small team was decimated by the first round of layoffs in 2023. These layoffs included a pregnant colleague on maternity leave, our longest-tenured sales rep, and another who had been hired two months prior. As our revenue plunged, the writing was on the wall. I was part of the second round of layoffs two weeks into the new year. It was awesome to see the CPO’s personal brand logo at the bottom of my termination email. Corporations suck.

Hello and thanks for sharing your feedback. Even if it's difficult to hear, it's valuable and I appreciate you taking the time. I can only imagine how disappointing it must feel to pour your heart and soul into a startup only to see it become a small part of a larger org and not get the same level of passion and investment that you would have hoped. For what it's worth, the technology and talent that has come into Greenhouse via that acquisition has made (and continues to make) a major impact and for that I am very thankful. GHSA is an awesome product (I used it today in fact!) and we continue to invest in it. Despite that, I'm of course sad to hear that your experience was so negative with this acquisition and wish you well,

Pros

Employees genuinely care about each other, and have a sense of community. There is flexibility on how you do your work (in some teams). The product is solid, and is a good fit for mid market companies with a standard recruiting process.

Cons

After 2 layoffs in less than a year, it's tough to trust the folks who are doing planning / making decisions at Greenhouse. They claim to be people first, they claim to care about customer experience, but their actions tell a different story. People of color, people with disabilities and employees in vulnerable life situations were laid off without any warning. This didn't feel very "people first". In the customer facing part of the organization, the multiple layoffs created 2x work for everyone left. How can you almost double the customer load for AMs/ CSMs and expect customers to get the same stellar experience? Typical for a tech company, there was no change to compensation or incentives for the additional workload, and no direction on how to handle the increased book size. The tide is definitely changing at Greenhouse.

Company going downhill

Pros

Great colleagues and brilliant minds

Cons

The leadership at Greenhouse leaves much to be desired, making career advancement an exceptionally challenging endeavor. While the company professes a commitment to being people-centric and prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, there have been troubling instances. Complaints about inappropriate client interactions, including disrespectful tones and profanity directed towards me as a person of color, were unfortunately disregarded when brought to light. Despite documenting these issues, I found myself expected to continue working with clients who had demonstrated blatant disrespect. Adding to the challenges, there have been two rounds of layoffs in less than a year, with the second round being kept confidential. This lack of transparency left remaining employees burdened with an increased workload and a larger number of accounts. Notably, we were explicitly instructed not to disclose the layoffs to clients, and no public statement was issued by our CEO. This raises questions about Greenhouse’s claim to be a people-first company and a leader in hiring, considering the repeated layoffs within a short timeframe and the attempt to conceal the most recent round.

Thank you for your candid feedback and for taking the time to share your experience. I'm sorry to hear that your time at Greenhouse Software was marked by such challenging and disappointing experiences. I truly value our commitment to being people-centric and prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, and it’s disheartening to hear that we have not lived up to these ideals from your perspective. Instances of disrespectful client interactions, especially those involving inappropriate behavior towards people of color, are completely unacceptable. Your feedback will be helpful in driving progress here. Additionally, our Customer Success department has taken steps to support people of color within the team when we've observed some challenging and potentially racially biased customer interactions. These actions have include bringing in an outside consultancy to recommend strategies, update our processes, and provide managerial tools to combat these issues. We also collaborated with our internal DE&I team on these initiatives. We will continue to take such instances seriously and work hard to address them. Regarding the layoffs, I understand the stress and uncertainty that come with such situations. It’s clear we missed something in our staff communications as this was not intended to be secret nor was it. Moving forward, I will strive to communicate more openly and honestly with all employees, especially during significant organizational changes. Your advice on management is well noted. Prioritizing DEI initiatives, ensuring respectful treatment for all employees, transparent communication, and fostering supportive leadership are all critical areas that we need to focus on. I appreciate your feedback and will continue to work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment at Greenhouse Software. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
