Lack of communication and disorganized

Pros

Free lunch, 401k match, vacation time, and great coworkers

Cons

Communication between and amongst management levels is completely lacking. More silos than ever. Teams within the same department are on different pages. With the historic turnover rate, there is understaffing and overwork everywhere you turn. Production is key with meeting deadlines far outweighing the quality of the work. Manager to employee allocation makes no sense - some managers have more than 15 direct reports while others have 3 or less.

Making a difference and seeing results

Pros

It hasn't even been a year since I joined GuideOne and I can already see the difference I am making and the positive change this company is going through. As an individual contributor, you don't always see a direct impact your work has on the company, but I do. And I appreciate that my manager and GuideOne expects me to take risks and push the limits without the fear that if I mess up, my job will be at stake. I also love having the flexibility to manage my schedule when needed. My second week here, unexpectedly I needed to be at home and my manager offered to let me work from home instead of taking a vacation day. Since then, I've felt confident and trusted to manage my schedule to have a great work/life balance, something I truly value. Bottom line is, I feel cared for when I come to work and for that I am thankful I chose GuideOne and they chose me.

Cons

Our building isn't the most modern, but there have been renovations to certain areas recently. Those should continue throughout the building.

Be Aware

Pros

The company used to be one of the most amazing companies in the greater Des Moines area to work for. Free parking, free lunch, small on-site fitness facility. Casual dress.

Cons

Be aware of working for GuideOne. A company that was originally founded on caring for people only cares about their faltering success from years past. A new leadership team has brought on a mindset of only caring about the all mighty dollar and no longer on the employees. New management attempted to show "they care" about the culture by implementing onsite parties, but forgot that if your employees aren't cared for, what good are a few free drinks. The building is a mess both culture-wise and structurally. One former claims rep went as far as saying that if he were an agent "he wouldn't insure the building". The mold all over the building has been an issue for 20+ years and in an attempt to save on expenses, they "fix" the problems every year to no avail. Employees are stressed and overworked. There isn't enough staff to keep up with the workload and continue to fire people for reasons that don't make sense. The health insurance premiums are ridiculous. Basically, 10 years ago the company was a fantastic one that took care of their employees. Now, if you don't sleep at your desk at night and skip all activities outside of work you aren't considered a "team player". Mid-level managers willingness to be compassionate with employees physical, emotional or mental state is a joke. They no longer care about their employees. They are to concerned with worrying about their own job to take care of their people. The business is moving away from their core value of insuring places of worship or providing coverage for faith-based institutions and non-profits and are trying to become every other carrier in America and will spare no expense at doing so even if it costs them the health of their staff.
