Pros

Work life balance is good.

Cons

If you are a serious software engineer, I recommend you stick away from this company. All projects that I worked on have no architectural standards or optimization in mind. Everything seems "duct taped" together in hopes that it will work for the next tax season however this does not account maintenance of the code, resulting in more areas where projects can break. Also, with new management and organization changes, you will do little to no software development. Everything is done with an in house tool that have you connect the dots or map data but it is not coding. You are expected to learn all about taxes instead instead of developing your coding skills. In the long run you will lose your coding skills working at H&R Block. Also with little or no room for career development, it makes it almost impossible to advance as a software engineer.

Pros

I enjoy working with clients and enjoy helping them get their tax returns (accurately) completed. The company has a tremendous database of tax information, regularly updated, and lots and lots of instruction available for employees. If you don't have a college degree, it's a way to earn minimum wage without gutting chickens all day.

Cons

Hiring person misrepresented the (required) training course and misrepresented the responsibilities of the role. Hiring manager also represented that the first tax season would be at Minimum Wage, because it's the equivalent of a "paid internship" (more on that later). When I first met my immediate manager (after completing the lengthy training course), they told me that I was "expected" to market the company. The marketing would of course be unpaid - and I get nothing for inviting my friends and family to use the company's service. Worse, they would then be clients of the company, and if I were to leave, I wouldn't be able to bring them wherever else I go. My manager is thoroughly overwhelmed by the role, so I have had zero (repeat - *ZERO*) feedback or mentoring. So much for the previously-mentioned "paid internship". Learning the company's (proprietary) tax prep software is all on my own time. They don't pay for the time it takes to learn it. I've been "asked" to come into company offices - and then told "oh, we don't pay for this". And worst of all (so far, anyway) is that we are expected to be the custodians in the office. Yes, take out the trash, run the vacuum, clean the toilet. Ultimately, it's minimum wage - even for people who've worked there for years and years. There are far better places to work, and most other employers pay for your time while you're taking required trainings.

Pros

H&R Block offers an impressive opportunity to learn about taxes and tax preparation. The offices have a high standard of organization and a customer-oriented attitude. The region I work for has excellent management.

Cons

The median salary at H&R Block is around $16,000 a year. That means one-half of all the 10,000 employees make more than that and the other half doesn't. Block hired Jeff Jones as its new CEO - Jones came from Uber. Jeff Jones is being paid over $14 million a year (plus perks), which results in a 879 to 1 ratio for CEO to median worker pay. The vast majority of seasonal tax preparers make about $10 an hour and given the trend of people doing their taxes online, the likelihood of this increasing grows ever dimmer. The commission incentive system is extremely weak, especially for those in their first years of working here. Most seasonal workers have 2nd and 3rd jobs, much like everyone else in America these days.
