Pros

Education on tax preparation online that keeps you busy. The managers do not come in to work and bother the trained staff frequently. They call and harass everyone and you are lucky if they stay away.

Cons

The reality is the tax preparers are trained in tax and have a higher education level due to training than the managers, The managers are young and immature and do not manage in any kind of predictable way. Possibly everyone in the retail branch is making minimum wage so expectations on a company of mature and thoughtful leaders is not what you are getting at all. This is a churn and burn type of sweatshop with the young untrained managers calling the shots. Anyone with a brain should stay away or get in and get out. And they are predators of the poor. Do your clients and your self a favor and move on to better company with better morals and ethics. This company has none.

Pros

They follow labor laws and pay time and a half for overtime.

Cons

They don't pay any of their employees what they are actually worth. Starting pay for me was $10/hour. I have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, and have prior experience working for CPA's, along with technical support for tax prep software. H&R Block's products such as Emerald Advance and Refund Transfer prey on lower-income taxpayers. HRB charges extra for preparing returns with Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, and filing Head of Household, further preying on lower-income taxpayers. Managers ignore the availability that employees state at beginning of season. H&R Block is open Sundays, but there is no incentive for employees to work Sundays, other than losing our jobs when we don't come in for a scheduled Sunday shift. Returning employees are required to complete training on HRB Block Academy, but makes employees pay for our training (which, again, is training that HRB requires its returning employees to complete). Not really any opportunities for advancement, unless you are related to someone there. No benefits. Starting pay for this industry is substandard. Some employees work 70-80 hours a week during tax season, so no work/life balance.

Pros

Work life balance if you have the right manager Access to information Benefits Autonomy in some districts

Cons

Lots of excessive drinking at management meetings and conventions by corporate managers, human resource managers Cutthroat Upper management lies constantly HR handles issues poorly and just wants to “sweep it under the rug” when you’re a manager calling on an employee So hard up for tax pros they will rehire anyone no matter how many times they’ve been reported to HR Don’t bother busting you rear to preform well, promotions are given out based on who is “liked” more not by who performs better. The numbers prove it. Left hand never knows what the right hand is doing with company MVPs What is a good idea and the way to do something today could be the dumbest idea tomorrow Disorganization You will be promised the world to boost your performance but in the end it was just all fluff DO NOT FALL FOR THE “talking up” it’s just to benefit the manager NOT YOU When fluff doesn’t work scare tactics will, you will always feel like you are disposable at any moment.
