Good Company

Pros

Lots of opportunities to move up. Fairly supportive of work-life balance. Good benefits.

Cons

Need to be prepared for annual layoffs. I worked for Block for almost 14 years and we have had layoffs in every single year. Typically they occur at the end of tax season. Over the years, they have cut a lot of really good people with a lot of mindshare and history with the company. It is as hard on the people left behind as it is on the ones who are let go. I know a lot of people who have left the company voluntarily because they just felt like they couldn't go through another season of "will they or won't they let me or my fellow team members go?"

Pros

Work from home friendly (for most teams), good people (co-workers), yearly bonus. Good work/life balance on some teams (but not all)

Cons

Corporate slop environment - revolving door of managers, endless cycle of constant reorgs and layoffs even during good years. Raises are minimual even with good performance - you'll need to change positions/teams to get any real wage increase.

Pros

Work from anywhere environment Flexibility Generous dependent care leave policy Unlimited Pay

Cons

Everyone is competing for a limited number of director, VP and executive positions, making advancement difficult Layoffs are very common. It is normal to login and find a whole department has been eliminated. They are a tax company that wants to be a tech company. They care more about AI and other technology than they do about the tax filing experience

Pros

The company has longevity in the market and great name recognition. The tax professionals and franchisees that are the engine of the company are dedicated and great employees. The company has a strong focus on continuing education.

Cons

Layoffs in May are a common theme. As soon as tax season ends, the corporate staff start walking on eggshells. Even in years where the tax season went well, you can count on "right-sizing" occurring. Too much institutional knowledge is swept out the door on an annual basis. It doesn't seem like poor performers are the ones targeted for layoffs either. In their most recent wave of firings, employees who had just finished Block School (training offered to select few who are identified as future leaders in the company) were let go. Their actions do not match their mission statement. Check Linkedin every May for a new group of now former HRB employees announcing their departure.

Well-intentioned SLT

Business Outlook

Pros

HRB is more than decent for a FinTech company. SLT emphasizes work-life balance and a positive environment. Cautious financial approach has prevented layoffs for several years.

Cons

Upper and middle management don't always have the same focus on WLB as the SLT. Opportunities for upward movement are limited, but to a degree that's a price paid for no layoffs.
