Pros

You usually only have to work 8 hours and you're done for the day.

Cons

If your relief doesn't show up, you have to stay an extra 4 or 8 hours. When you're hired you get put on whatever shift is open, typically your only days off are during the week. Did I mention the pay is absolutely awful for such a high stress job? You can hardly pay your bills getting paid this amount. A lot of promises were made by corporate during my time with the company and none were every followed through. You don't get paid any extra for working nights, weekends, or holidays. Family/Work life balance is nearly impossible with the awful hours and days off. You get a lot of PTO but you'll probably use it all just to get a weekend off here and there, and that's only if coverage can be found. It's a very high stress environment and can be very negative at times. Just make sure this is really a job you want to take. I love dispatching but I would never recommend this company.

There are many challenges associated with staffing a 24x7x365 dispatch center. Most of the time, our effectiveness and employee satisfaction are determined by how successful we are hiring qualified candidates from the local work force. As a company, we must meet our contractual service obligations to our clients and we understand how employee absences and vacancies can affect our overall effectiveness. Emergency dispatch is not a job for everyone and it brings with it a lot of stressful situations. Thank you for your comments.

Terrible expectations from underpaid employees.

Pros

Strong team relationship within shifts. It's a job. Close relationship with law enforcement.

Cons

Corporation changes expectations and rules for employees at the drop of a hat. There is no annual raise, simply a cost of living adjustment. No additional vacation days with years experience. No paid accrued leave. Flatly, 40hrs one can /request/ per quarter with no prompt decision as to if it will be approved. Very often impossible to take days off due to idiotic hiring and staffing processes leaving shifts understaffed regularly. Leave does not carry over at end of year. Employees have next to no relationship with corporate. Ridiculous shifts similar to a Longshore man or worse. No disciplinary action whatsoever for employees. Corporation does not allow references, only verification of employment.

We appreciate your comments. Our history as a company is that we have always provided a fair and balanced work environment, with employee pay commensurate with local salary surveys, and the benefits packages are the same for all IXP employees. We understand the differences that do exist when working in a 24x7x365 emergency communications center, especially as it relates to establishing a relationship with our corporate headquarters, and we will look into ways to mitigate that problem.
