Pros

The MICROS name looks good on the resume. Columbia, Maryland is a nice place to work with plenty of other companies located in the Gateway Corporate Park. Plenty of free parking.

Cons

MICROS attempts to follow a waterfall model. However, there is no software engineering management to support the process. At best, software development in the Columbia location is CMMI-1. Other subsidiaries or locations may have better process. This is not the place to go if you have a degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering and are expecting a mature software development process and software development organization. There is no career path in the R&D group.

Pros

The commute isn't too bad. All the lads and lasses I work with feel the same about where we work. Good management staff. A good place to start, but not to make a career of.

Cons

Very underpaid, cell phones must be out of site, no overtime, micro managed, lack of documentation, lack of any "real" training, have to wing everything, have to play it by ear, things are done by the skin of our teeth, disorganized, utter chaos, broken product. Our CEO is at the top of the food chain, but feels the need to come into the Micros building at 3:00 am to check up on the employees. He loves to walk the floors of the call centers on the weekdays and weekends to see what the employees are up to. His other favorite hobby is to monitor Java City between the hours of 8:00am to 9:00am, in hopes of catching an employee sneaking to grab a cup of coffee. I'd say that Tom G. is a very bored CEO with alot of time on his hands. If he is that bored, maybe he should demote himself to a floor manager so he can make all the spot checks he wants!

Pros

It's easy to get hired and I've been paid far worse. My managers, when I get their attention, generally know the product well. If I request a day off or call out, I'm generally not made to feel guilty.

Cons

The IDEA of a mental health break is anathema. Take a break to call your husband? Nope. A moment to check the online news because you're trying to unwind? Uh-uh. A pleasant bit a of music at your desk to smooth out the day? Get real. Get off the phone with a difficult customer you just had to call? Well, YOU called THEM back so your phone will ring immediately under many circumstances. If you do your job right , you're expected to spend the entire shift doing NOTHING BUT THAT. No smoke breaks, no reading breaks, no chat breaks, no websurfing. Oh, and if you're not so good at your job? Well, you're at least allowed to keep being bad at your job. We're judged as a team, so your bonehead colleagues failure is your fault.
