Pros

Great teams and cross-functional partners. Opportunities to travel to Asia. Pay during my employment there was very good- not sure this is still the case from what I’ve heard.

Cons

Influx of upper management from Walmart/Sams has turned this company into a corporate hell. They are all incompetent at their jobs. Michael’s is not Walmart so managing the same way is not working. Always changing process and demanding more with less resources (including employees). Nothing matters to C-suites except getting the company into a good position to go public. Morale has suffered greatly as a result.

Pros

As the Store Manager its the environment you create that is the real benefit. If you hire good people their presents and help is what makes you continue to work.

Cons

You can chose to work your only 40 hrs but your store will fail. They do not give you enough hours or employees to do the job. Only 1 cashier and a manager staffed was a constant . Truck team is lucky to get 1-2 days a week. Rarely giving out more then 5-20 cents per raise and makes just above min wage. Michael's chooses to be around anchor stores like target which can make 5-9 dollars more. Corporate is overbearing in paperwork and useless calls. DMs and Store Managers don't last long. Everyone is expendable. Corporate is overcome with bad company product purchases and constant technical problems that will bring your stores business to a halt, it will be reflected on your scorecard and will be your fault. Constant pressure to bury your customers in credit cards that NO ONE WANTS and are a terrible financial decision for anyone(look at the Apr%). At the end of the day Michael's will end up being a Dollar General of crafts, Bad products, no employees and trashed.

Pros

The benefit package is very nice, direct supervisor is pretty amazing, and there is plenty of opportunity for growth.

Cons

Department Managers and Assistant Managers are paid $12.50-$13.50 an hour (new hires into these roles) While it may be a full time position with good benefits the pay is incredibly low and not fair based each positions list of responsibilities. A Dept manager is responsible for a specific department, while an ASM is responsible for the entire store, these are not equitable roles and should not have equitable pay. Also its not uncommon for a tenured Dept Manager to make substantially more than a newly hired ASM. The company has unrealistic expectations on its receiving teams, regardless of the size of the receiving team, most teams are grossly understaffed due to pay and required hours. Store Managers are required to work 45 hours per week but most work 60 plus just to keep the store moving. LP is an absolute joke with little to no policies in place to protect the employee or the company, Retail is hard and underappreciated in general, but Michaels takes unrealistic expectations, horrible unfair pay, and unpleasant working conditions to an all time high!
