Pros

I met some of the most amazing people at this company. They've hired an incredible amount of talent. The equity mission attracts people who care deeply about education.

Cons

Working at Paper felt like being in a toxic relationship with someone who expected me to read their mind. Myself and the majority of my colleagues were constantly concerned about being fired or having reports fired at any moment without input or warning. There was no sense of psychological safety or value placed on trust-building. Upper management was constantly pulling the rug out from under us, not providing any expectations but then coming down on us if we did something they didn't like (even if what they want/don't want hadn't been previously communicated). Unfortunately, I saw a lot of people lose trust in managers for this reason, leading to a real lack in innovation because employees became scared to take risks. I was so disappointed by Paper. I started out feeling so excited and dedicated given the mission of equity and after around five months I had the realization that this company was not what I thought it was, and unfortunately the issues seem to run so deep I'm not confident things will ever get better.

A toxic & confusing place to work

Pros

The company does employ some cool, smart, down to earth people

Cons

There is absolutely zero transparency within the company. The company is remote, and the onboarding process is a giant joke. You will not be set up for success when onboarded. If you are not a part of the 'Montreal' crew, you are not free to provide constructive feedback. If you were to question someone's judgment call who is in upper management (even if they are making a bad call), you will have a target on your back. The company announced an 'opt' out program in the beginning of 2023, and insisted the incentive had nothing to do with layoffs. After 8% of the company decided to opt out (quit & receive severance), the company laid off another percentage of staff about two months later. During this time, the company announced "stable financial status" and even bought a few companies. While I was employed at Paper, there was a lot of concern from employees regarding the poor glassdoor reviews. The executives were extremely dismissive of these concerns, and even suggested the reviews are being left by bots. I'm not a bot, I'm a real person, who unfortunately poured their heart & soul into their position, only to be coerced into 'opting out' and quitting.

Pros

Choose your own schedule. Working with people who are incredibly diverse and driven. Remote.

Cons

It has been beyond frustrating to keep up with all the changes that this company has gone through. I totally acknowledge that change is part of life, and I pride myself in being adaptable and flexible. However, working in Paper under the current leadership feels like you're constantly put in the front line of an open battle, taking all the deadly hits, and if you happen to raise a concern about this in the process, you will be stabbed in the back by the very people you represent. This isn't about helping students anymore. Putting the students first would mean they take care of their tutors, and we are NOT taken care of. The work culture implemented by HQ is toxic and low key authoritarian. I do believe in the original mission behind this company. But as all good things, it has been ruined by greed.
